Savings Godsend

The 8th edition of this book retails for $251. Yes ladies and gentlemen, school is EXPENSIVE. Luckily, my amazing professor told us that either the 6th or 7th edition would suffice as they changes made for the newest edition were minimal at best. Seller sent the item very quickly and the product was in near mint condition. Overall, exceeded all expectations.

This memoir takes place in 2005 and early 2006. The environmental nightmare that is the destruction of the Atchafalaya Basin continues. The title refers to a Native American term for the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 and beyond, which many refer to as "the great sadness." The thin places grow thinner, and author must come to grips with a thing none of his forefathers could have ever imagined: There are endings. There is finality.
The Louisiana Public Broadcasting documentary "Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection" was based on this book and its predecessor, "Native Waters: An Indigenous Fly Fisher's Journey Across Water and Time." It is now being broadcast nationwide on public broadcasting stations everywhere, and was an Emmy nominee and recipient of a Bronze Telly Award.

About the Author
Roger Emile Stouff is the son of Nicholas Leonard Stouff Jr., last chief of the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana, and Lydia Marie Gaudet Stouff, daughter of a Cajun farmer. He has been a journalist for more then thirty years and writer of the award-winning column "From the Other Side" in the St. Mary and Franklin Banner-Tribune. He was featured on the television show "Fly Fishing America" in 2006, and was writer and narrator of the documentary "Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection" on Louisiana Public Broadcasting in 2010.

The Great Sadness Is A Great Joy

Roger Stouff does an exceptional job of sharing the Culture of the Chitimacha by weaving tales of his experience as an Indian man watching his ancestral waters fade away while hanging on to as much tradition as he can. The book is at times poignant but always heartwarming because Stouff's love of his ancestry and of the waters of the Atchafalaya Basin always shine through.

Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Pirsig go fly-fishing

Roger Emile Stouff has delivered another gift to us folks who, because we are chained to conventions of time and space, inhabit only our safe world we can see and hear. In The Great Sadness, Mr. Stouff guides us through his "thin" place, where, as he so eloquently writes: "There are places where the boundaries between this world and the next, the separations of the seen and the unseen, are not so substantial."

This is a work of non-fiction. At times you have to remind oneself of this fact. He teaches you about his near Luddite obsession with handcrafted wooden boats and bamboo fly-fishing rods. But the most moving prose of this follow-up to his fine book, Native Waters, is when Mr. Stouff takes your head in his remarkable writing hand and opens doors into the world of his Native American ancestors where you would not venture without such a guide. I offer a few examples of his guidebook and if these do not strike a chord you may want to go see a neurologist to check your wiring.

The following describes his father's death.

"I keep his medicine bag close by. It's a small leather satchel, with buckskin fringe, no bigger than a thick trade paperback book. I don't know what's in it because it's his medicine bag. I have never opened it. It's full of the things that made him strong, kept him close to the water and protected him from the bad in the world. I can't possess his magic, but I can borrow from it because the same blood flows in my veins."

"Someday I'll have my own. Full of the things that strengthen and protect me. I haven't started to collect it. I'm a little lost over it, because I don't know what should be in there. He died before he could teach me. I thought of putting it in his coffin with him, but he had his abalone bolo tie on and the eagle feather in his hands, both full of power, and when I thought
of placing the bag at his side, the resonance of a tuning fork spoke in a deep voice slightly tinged with the accent of a man raised in Texas:
Keep it. I know the way.

"Perhaps there's a piece of flint, so if he ever found himself in a dark place off the edge of a map he could strike a spark off the blade of his knife and bring fire. I'll bet there's a fish hook in there, not for catching, but for remembering.

"It's too small. It can't hold all the things I imagine if I think with the non-indigenous part of me. But the Indian man knows that the whole universe could fit in that bag, because so-called "laws" of time and space are only valid if you believe in them."

Mr. Stouff is a gifted writer. If you enjoy reading Kurt Vonnegut, his ability to become unstuck in time, and communicate with his ancient Native American ancestors, will remind you of Billy Pilgrim. If you, like me, are a recurrent visitor to Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, you will revel in his devotion to Quality. One need not be a devotee of the intricacies of the handmade bamboo fly-fishing rods he so admires to appreciate that the rod is an instrument by which the Quality of a man can be judged.

The Great Sadness is a work of Quality. It is highly recommended.

Roger Stouff's books in the mystery and sci-fi/fantasy genre are always fast paced, hard to put down tales. However, when he takes on matters close to his heart, like "The Great Sadness" the writing is profound and thought provoking. Like sitting with an elder listening to them speak of the old days. Excellent

I read a lot of true crime and I think this is an excellent book. There is so much badly written stuff by hacks it is a pleasure to find something so intelligent and well-written. It is the best true crime I've read this year, by far.
This book is gripping and suspenseful--could not put it down, and I knew a lot about the case.
The author must have had good access to police files and interviews. he is very focused on the investigation and the interrogations, providing a lot of details I did not know. How they focused on the suspect and how they pursued her is riveting!
This book is a character study of a psychopath I found very convincing (not that I needed to be.)
I appreciate how the author dealt with the actual murder. It conveys the full horror of the crime without any sense of exploitation or titillation. It is horrific, but it did happen and the story needs to be told. You are left with a strong sense of her life and what her family has been through. Tragic and horrifying.
This is how true crime should be written.

Wildly fascinating

This is one of the better new TC finds of late. One of the strangest crimes and criminals I have read about in a long time. I think women will be especially interested in this story because of the setting in lululemon athletica. As other reviewers have written, you will want to read it in one or two sittings. It moves along with a great deal of suspense as Jayna goes back into the yoga store with Brittany after close. This is such a sad case but the author did a wonderful and sensitive job with reporting it. Highly recommended.

I read about the murder when it happened (DC area native) but this book has great details about the detective work but you also get to know about the two families affected by this horrible crime.

About the Author
One of Iceland’s most celebrated young writers, ANDRI SN�R�MAGNASON is the author poetry, plays, fiction, and non-fiction, and in 2009 he co-directed the documentary Dreamland, which was based on his own book Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual for a Frightened Nation. In 2002 Magnason’s LoveStar was named "Novel of the Year" by Icelandic booksellers and received the DV Literary Award and a nomination for the Icelandic Literary Prize. It was also shortlisted for the 2013 Philip K. Dick Award. His 2012 The Story of the Blue Planet—now published or performed in twenty-six countries—became the first children's book to receive the Icelandic Literary Prize and received the Janusz Korczak Honorary Award and the West Nordic Children's Book Prize. Magnason is the winner of the 2010 Kairos Award. He lives in Reykjav�k.

Calculated love with funerals in the skies

I originally read the icelandic version of this book by Magnason, being icelandic and all that, and found it to be brilliant.

Here, a distopic version of the future is put in a humorous context with the love of ones live being a calculated.. say technical fact and every single person being a walking advertisement, voluntarily and sometimes involuntarily if unlucky. The story follows two lovers living in this crazy future that one day are told that they have NOT been "calculated together" - they are not ment to be together - and their true partners are out there waiting for them, sad and lonely. Disbelieved and in love, they do everything they can to fight this calculated fact resulting in humorous scenarios and funerals in the skies..

I recommend this one to all that like the works of Douglas Adams.

I just finished this book yesterday, as a "random pick read" from my local library. I am very fortunate to have stumbled across it. If you enjoy 'science fiction' which is not so much about 'teleporting, laser cannons, and space travel' (i.e., based in 'extreme tech') but rather which takes current issues in society; teases them into a possible future 'what if...' carried to the Nth degree (somewhat absurdly, although how much so remains to be debated in this case) -- then you will love this book. The story reads incredibly well, is engaging, and succeeds at presenting a future which is both utterly horrific and entirely recognizable. It addresses a fairly wide range of themes spanning work and our place in society; society and its place in our lives; love; death; religion; advertising and media; communication and relationships; corporations, growth and 'progress'; and the overlap of all these themes in people and how they live their lives. Even if you don't particularly care for a book which has 'a lot to say' this is an excellent and enjoyable read that can be simply taken for an entertaining and engaging story if that is all you feel like :-)

I think this may be one of my favorite novels! The plot is incredibly clever and incredibly prescient, given that it was originally written close to 15 years ago. Lovestar is all at once funny, heartbreaking, and terrifying. Absolutely a must-read!

In this rich and enthralling biography of American confessional poet Sexton, Middlebrook (English, Stanford) approaches Sexton's life and work with a masterful balance of objectivity and empathy, weaving a compulsively readable tale of Sexton's transformation from housewife to award-winning poet while she battled severe mental illness. Middlebrook's analysis of the relationship of Sexton's illness to her art is rendered more immediate and more powerful by her skillful use of tapes of Sexton's psychotherapy sessions. Avoiding literary and psychoanalytical jargon, Middlebrook judiciously assesses Sexton's work and describes the familial, psychological, and sociological determinants of Sexton's illness, which finally drove her to suicide in 1974. Highly recommended for research collections in literature and women's studies, for collections in psychiatry, and for general readers, even if it were not the only biography of Sexton available. Frustrated as a housewife and mother in suburban Boston and plagued by mental problems including suicidal obsessions, Sexton, beautiful, intense, and gifted, began writing poetry at age 29 on the advice of her therapist. Within ten years she had won nearly every prize available to an American poet--and collected hundred of hours of tapes from her therapy sessions. Access to these tapes and the intimate revelations of Sexton's family have enabled Middlebrook (English/Stanford; Walt Whitman and Wallace Stevens, 1974) to explore here some of the dynamics of creativity, and the relationship between art and mental disorder. Artful, oblique, confessional, Sexton's verse, as Middlebrook shows, is representative of her generation of emotionally distraught poets, nearly all addicted to booze, pills, sex, and to themselves: Anguished, broken, many ended up suicides. Robert Lowell, Roethke, Schwartz, Bishop, Rahv, Berryman, Rich, Jarrell, James Wright, Anthony Hecht, George Starbuck--they were a community of pain, friends or lovers, meeting at workshops, readings, or retreats. Their poetry is private, academic, and written to one another: Sexton wrote some of the best. But however much recognition Sexton received as a poet, her personal life remained at the edge, as the title of her first collection implies: To Bedlam and Partway Back (1960). And everyone was forced to share that space with her: Her husband adored, mothered, and finally beat her; her daughters, emotionally abandoned, finally rejected her, one confessing that her mother tried to seduce her; and her lovers- -men, women, even her therapist--were unable to fulfill her demands. Before she finally succeeded in committing suicide, however, she claimed she had ``lived to the hilt.'' Middlebrook is better at explicating the poems than she is at explaining the life. That remains, in spite of the tapes, a mystery, one of universal interest relevant to the large issues of poetry, madness, and suicide, but only tangentially related to the feminist thesis that Middlebrook prefers to associate with Sexton: a typical victim, she says, of society's repression of women. Essential reading for biography and poetry fans alike

You don't have to be a poetry afficianado to find this uniquely well-researched biography fascinating. Middlebrook makes ample use of the beautiful-but-mad-housewife-turned-poet angle, but does the more challenging job of examining the contradictions between Sexton and her work. a fascinating, brutally honest examination of a dead poet laid bare

Biographies are a tricky business. To tell the truth about a person's life, to be fair and thorough without being unkind is a fine line to tread. Diane Middlebrook certainly didn't flinch at giving the reader the dirt on Anne Sexton. From her series of extra-marital affairs to her daughter's memories of Sexton's inappropriate, incestuous behavior--all of it was fair game in Middlebrook's book. She even quoted from audiotapes of Anne Sexton's therapy sessions. This is a biography of a woman brutally exposed, psychologically naked and under a spotlight; strangely, I think that Anne Sexton would be at peace with this enormous invasion of her privacy.

In addition to the lurid personal details and the deep analyses of Sexton's troubled psyche, Middlebrook shows the reader Sexton's intense determination and devotion to becoming a famous poet. Anne would sit at her typewriter for hours everyday, working on poems. She was also very aware of the benefits of creating a dramatic public persona.

Sexton would walk up on stage in a striking black cocktail dress with red lipstick and a seductive swagger. Her throaty voice would cast a spell over the audience as she read her poems. "I am a middle-aged witch. . ." she would begin, and the room would be spell-bound by both her glamour and her bold confessional poetry. But underneath it all, she was a nervous wreck, unable to give a reading without a quick shot of liquor to make her knees stop shaking!

Diane Middlebrook's biography was so piercing, so unforgiving, it was, at times, truly uncomfortable to read. I felt almost voyeuristic, pouring over these shocking private details of Anne Sexton's life. Yet, Middlebrook's book did give me an amazingly powerful feeling of intimacy with one of my favorite poets. She revealed the fragile, flawed Anne Sexton behind the public shell of dark glamour.

Any fans of Sexton's poetry that want to understand the woman behind the words should go ahead and get this book; just be forewarned that Middlebrook does not try to flatter Sexton, only to be truthful.

Very good book, entertaining and educative.

The story of these researchers in the Kalahari is amazing and true! Incredible, the things they endure, all for their love of the animals, and their research into them is very valuable. Interestingly written; even though this is essentially a scientific work, it is not dry, but a wonderful story of how Man interacts with the Wild Side. I loved the hornbills in Camp, and, when I was just in Botswana, experienced for myself their mischievousness and wit.
I learned a lot from this book, which I was constantly telling people about!

A good way to experience the Kalahari - or enhance a personal experience.

Bought it to read while on photo safari in South Africa and Botswana, but I was too exhausted each evening after two game drives per day. Reading it afterwards, I have a much greater appreciation and understanding of the Owens' experiences, joys, and frustrations. It's not a literary masterpiece, but I think it gives a great picture of both animal and human life in the Kalahari - and a reflection of all life on earth. With my personal experience and reading Mark's and Delia's experience, I don't think I can ever enjoy a zoo the same way I once did.

Bad Copy Editing

I'm really enjoying this book but the scanning came up with errors that nobody fixed. "Mark" becomes "Marie" and there are "scent maries"; they told "yarn after yam", "AH" instead of "all" and so forth. This slows down my enjoyment of the book.

so good. I haven't finished it yet

So far, so good. I haven't finished it yet, but it has definitely proven so far to be a very helpful resource. Sally is introducing a way to change your diet that I've never previously heard of before, but it makes sense. When you focus on adding healthy foods instead of subtracting junk food, the healthy food has a way of taking over since your body starts to crave it more.

Six months on from starting this new eating plan I have lost 2 stone. Before starting I was struggling with my weight despite the fact that I was quite an active person. I was worried about my health, weight and high cholestrol. This plan gives you really simple steps to follow and straight forward approach to what you should be eating, the changes build on each other so it never feels overwhelming (like many diets can) and never feels like you are having to make sacricifies that leave you feeling hungry and unsatisfied. There is loads of really interesting and detailed nutiritional information that provide the underlying justification for the changes that are being made but also when you just need to know what the right thing is to do there is simple quidance on what should be on your plate this week. The changes I have made have given me the control over what I eat for the long term, I feel fitter, healthy and more energised.

First DIet Book That has EVER worked for me

At last, after many years of trying and failing to stick to healthy eating plans, I have found a way which works for me, and that’s The Stacking Plan. Like many people I struggle with the idea of having to go without or giving things up, so what I love about this book is that I can take things on instead. The introductory part of the book was clear and entertaining; it also persuaded me that making sure I get the right nutrients is just what I need at this time in my life where I am no longer young but not yet old. I also like to keep fit, so getting nutrients to give me stamina is important for me. I have now done Breakfast Week and am really enjoying adding MORE things to my breakfast - I’ve also really noticed how this stops me from having cravings later. I can honestly say that I am really looking forward to doing the rest of the plan

McKenzie rocks!!

I purchased all of Robin McKenzie's "Treat your own..." books for back, neck and shoulder. I first learned of the McKenzie method from a physical therapist I was seeing when dealing with a pinched nerve in my neck, which was causing sever discomfort in my arm. The 'method' put me on the road to recovery. I now augment my McKenzie exercises with regular fitness exercises. At age 61 I'm in the best shape I've been in for many years. I still have issues with neck & lower back, but the McKenzie method continues to improve things for me immensely. I'll stick with McKenzie for life. It beats acupuncture all to pieces.

Worth every penny

I was having issues with my shoulder and my doctor had me go to a physical therapist for treatment. He basically gave me one exercise to do, and made it worse. I went back to the doctor and gave me a cortisone injection and also suggested I obtain this book. Unfortunately the injection did not help much, but the exercises in the book has made a difference. The book is very easy to read and very comprehensive in the information you need to understand how your shoulder is designed and made to work. It provides excellent pictures on how to do the exercises and in the order that they should be done. I gave up on the PT, and am using the exercises in the book and seeing significant improvement in my shoulder.

I would recommend this to anyone that is having shoulder issues. I would also like to say that this does not replace a doctor's or physical therapists diagnosis. Once you are evaluated, ask your doctor if he feels you would benefit from this book.

This same author has similar books for the neck, back, knee, etc. I had already owned the neck and back ones, and have since added this one to my library.

Take responsibility and save medical $$

This book was very useful in understanding the functions, structure, and types of injuries that are particular to the shoulder. It has helped me find some comfort through simple behavioral changes rather than assuming medication and/or surgery is the always the answer. I may, in fact, need surgery to correct the results of a minor injury, but if so, it will be an informed decision.

Great book. Can't say enough good things about it.

This is a really great book for software engineers. If I were managing a group of developers (as I did earlier in my career) I would buy a copy for each engineer.

The book is targeted to either old hacks like me, who enjoy reading about the history of different programming styles, or graduate-level students in computer science. Speaking as an old hack, I felt as though the book was having a conversation with my inner dialogue - things I have thought about to myself but rarely talk about - things like how do you explain to a bad programmer why their program is bad.

The author uses one particular programming task: identifying the most common words in a text file and sorting them by frequency and shows 33 different ways of accomplishing the task in Python. She presents the 33 different styles mostly chronologically and notes their historical significance, which is one reason why this book is so much fun for the 62-year-old software engineer in 2014.

As it happened, after spending the weekend reading most of this book I had occasion to write a similar file i/o utility in C, so it was very amusing for me to realize that my first stab at it was naturally "monolithic" (the most primitive style).

Many many useful concepts. One of the few books I have ever read where it is important to read the preface. The author talks about the "constraints" in any programming project - some of these constraints can be self-imposed: I can remember at one point in my career, about 30 years ago, when I was programming in Pascal, deciding that I would not use any global variables - this would be an example of a self-imposed constraint - and over the years I often find myself deciding to adopt some particular style or "constraint" just to see what would happen.

Over the years I have been paid to program in Assembler, "C", Pascal, horizontal microcode, Forth, C++, Java, Python and Javascript and have done coursework using PL/I and Lisp. One of my takeaways from this book is that I would like to learn Haskell.

Excellent; not for beginners

I have not yet read the whole book, but I have greatly enjoyed the chapters on the following styles: Monolithic (chapter 3), Cookbook (4), Pipeline (5), Infinite Mirror (7), Kick Forward (8), The One (9), Quarantine (24), Map Reduce (30), Double Map Reduce (31). The author makes the code (in Python) available for free in a GitHub repository; it may be downloaded as a zip file using the "Download Zip" button in GitHub. Even though I am not a Python programmer, I was able to install Python and get the code running quickly. Note that the code is written in Python 2 (not Python 3), so you need to install a (free) Python 2 compiler to run it.

The book is well written and edited. To the editorial reviews, I would add that the Historical Notes and Further Reading sections are excellent, and that the Commentary makes it possible to read the chapters in a non-sequential order, because of the good references to other chapters. For example, the commentary in chapter 5 ("Pipeline"), which is the chapter about the basic function composition style, refers to the Cookbook style (chapter 4), the Quarantine style (chapter 24, on Monadic IO), and the Map Reduce style (chapter 30).

The author cautions that the book is not intended for beginners. I agree. As a Computer Science textbook, it could be used as a supplement in an upper division Concepts of Programming Languages course; this is how I am considering using it. It could be the basis for a Comparative Programming Languages course for beginning graduate students in Computer Science.

An Instant Classic

This is easily one of the best programming books I've read in the last couple years. It's easy to learn the fundamentals of a language, but learning how to program *well* is another matter altogether. Here the author takes you through a journey of 33 different programming styles, from the oldest to the most recent, by using a simple programming task and showing how you would accomplish it in that style using Python. While a knowledge of Python is certainly helpful, it's not essential, and you can pick up the basics of the language as long as you are well versed in some other high-level ones like PHP or Java. This is not a book on design patterns which is a common theme in OO programming and for which you will find many books as well. Here OO is just one style covered out of the bunch, others including Monolithic, Pipeline, Kick Forward, Map Reduce and so forth. While this is definitely not for beginners, it's certainly a book I would recommend for anyone looking to improve their coding and further their understanding of how to construct a program and/or application. The writing is excellent, keeps the reader entertained and engaged throughout, and I found it to be very accurate well edited as well.
