About the Author
Paulus Gerdes received his doctorates in mathematics, the history of mathematics, and mathematics education from the Universities of Dresden and Wuppertal (Germany). He has been a professor of mathematics at the Eduardo Mondlane University, and the Universidade Pedaggica in Mozambique for many years, serving as President from 1989-1996. He was a visiting professor at the University of Georgia from 1996 to 1998. He has served the African Mathematical Union as chair of the commission on the History of Mathematics in Africa since 1986, and was the secretary of the Southern African Mathematical Sciences Association 1991-1995.

Cross curricular resource

Paulus Gerdes' grey tone book is filled with clear illustrations, dimensions, explanations and history. It is a magnificent applied resource for maths, geometry and design teachers. My interest is in finding craft activities that support mathematical understanding. Weaving and pattern formation had great possibilities for motivating and securing sequential processes in maths learners of all levels and abilities but particularly those who have imaginative and kinaethetic strengths. Every school library needs this book to encourage creative, problem solving!

Wouldn't it be tremendous to really teach the value of the contributions of all cultures in history? This book was so useful to some Mathematical research that I am involved in at that time and now.
