A Christmas Present

Josh Lanyon has returned from sabbatical, and he hasn't lost his brilliance while he was away! His latest in the 'I Spy' series is a delightful treat for those who are fans of Mark & Stephen.

One of the hallmarks of these stories has always been the way Josh writes Mark's character; his feeling of desperation and fear at the possibility of losing Stephen for reasons that seem outside his control. Then in this story, add in one of the funniest scenes ever describing someone's Christmas-decorated home, and you have a story that never disappoints.

Thank you, Josh, for giving us this lovely holiday present!

One of the best Lanyon's couples

Speechless. This must be one of my favorite couples written by Josh Lanyon. This is not a review, it's me raving. I love Mark and Stephen. I like Stephen because he's an older protagonist, he's one of those gorgeous men of fifty who have nothing to prove anymore, who have seen their shares of events, who are sane and there. Paired up with a younger guy like Mark, who is sort of unreliable because of the circumstances and who's still insecure of his lover's affection, oh.my.god... it's the potential for a gut-wrenching story.

In this story Josh doesn't only write about this couple and what happens to them around Christmas time, he does more, he paints all the shades of trust in a relationship: demanded, given, betrayed, misunderstood, wasted. Trust between lovers committed to a relationship. Trust between people committed to a cause. And it declines all the shades of forgiveness based on understanding and acceptance of what can't be changed.

To say I loved this is an understatement. Best way to spend the first hour of Christmas night.

I liked revisiting Mark and Stephen

Well, Josh Lanyon is Josh Lanyon :). I could just leave you with this deep philosophical statement :). High quality is expected from his work. Mark and Stephen is one of my favorite couples from his stories, I think what I enjoyed the most in this story is that I was not annoyed that we are reading more about them. I loved the second story, but it truly felt as if their story is over. Each chapter builds an understanding of postcolonial approaches, their historical divergences from development studies and more recent convergences around issues such as discourses of development, knowledge, and power and agency within development. Up-to-date illustrations and examples from across the regions of the world bring to life important theoretical and conceptual issues. This topical book outlines an agenda for theory and practice within�postcolonial development studies and illustrates how, while postcolonialism and development pose significant mutual challenges, both are potentially enriched by each others insights and approaches.

About the Author

Dr Cheryl McEwan is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at Durham University. Her main research interests include the geographies of citizenship, democracy and transformation in South Africa, the lived experiences of postcoloniality in the global North and South and the role of postcolonial theory within social science research. She is a co-organiser of an ongoing ESRC seminar series on Postcolonial Economies, is currently Editor (Development Section) of Geography Compass, a new online journal, and a member of� the Editorial Board of the RGS-IBG/Blackwell Book Series.
