Be aware you need a textbook to go with this...

This could be a really fun little workbook if it had more explanation and clarification in it. A Sanskrit textbook is needed to supplement this workbook, and Sanskrit textbooks are expensive and usually not for beginners or casual students.

Very nice but needs the teacher's manual

This set of three workbooks is great, but they really need the teacher's manual to be useful. I was hoping to use it myself as an easy introduction to Sanskrit, but if I had known it require the manual, I would have either bought the manual or not bought the workbooks. They are not useful without the manual.

This book does make Sanskrit Fun! So far I've been through Parts 1-5 of this series and it has been very great. The first 3 really drill the script and the 4th and 5th get into a little grammar.

About the Author
Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the founder of Empirica Capital LLC, a hedge fund operator, and a fellow at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences of New York University. He has held a variety of senior derivative trading positions in New York and London and worked as an independent floor trader in Chicago. Dr. Taleb was inducted in February 2001 in the Derivatives Strategy Hall of Fame. He received an MBA from the Wharton School and a Ph.D. from University Paris-Dauphine.

Advanced Text on Derivatives Trading

Taleb is one arrogant dude who loves flooding his books with archaic words which were last employed in the English Language by Geoffrey Chauncer. But alas, Dynamic Hedging is a strong advanced text which goes through many nuanced topics. For example, he makes some good points on managing option greeks. Some chapters I really enjoyed which are hugely important in practice that you don't learn in any classroom: soft American options, discrete delta vs continuous delta, fungibility. Just a warning that you might have to read over sections multiple times before you digest ideas.

For example, for american options, you can tend to think of the early exercise having some sensitivity to interest rates (as rates go higher, it becomes more optimal to exercise puts and less optimal to exercise calls), so in some circumstances, the early exercise provision of american option is actually an option on rates. Also, every mathematician teaches delta as a continuous derivative d[option value]/d[spot], but really what's important is to the know the delta at discrete intervals since no one hedges continuously and also since in a real options book the greek sensitivities might flip or go through extreme changes over discrete intervals. Just some great material which makes you think hard.

The structure of the book jumps over the place, but mainly Taleb is focused on options, volatility, and exotics. So not exactly a good book on vanilla rates or commodities for example.

This text is certainly one I keep as a reference guide on my desk. As a sign of its value, everytime I read it, I do learn something new. I rated it highly based solely on the excellent and juicy material but the writing style is really horrible. Not for beginners but a great read for anyone interested in the deep details of trading derivatives.

Filled with gems for those who are willing to work to find them

Not a page turner. This is one of those books that requires the reader to work hard for the gems hidden within, but it is Taleb who has done the really hard work of organizing information in a way that makes the gems accessible to the reader in the first place. This book is more about exploring and explaining effective thought process in risk management than it is a "how to" manual. I am reminded of the John Houseman character in "the Paper Chase" TV series who says: "you come into the class with a head full of mush. You teach yourselves the law, I teach you to think like a lawyer." This book teaches the reader to think like a trader.

"The most thing to remember is that getting started is habitual, the same as procrastinating and avoidance. It's important to keep practicing the techniques that have worked best for you and to remember all those little revelations you had along the way," Lee Crutchly encourages in his book, "The Art of Getting Started."

At one hundred and sixty unnumbered pages, this small paperback book is targeted toward artists, writers, and readers looking for ways to get a project started. With no profanity, lewd scenes, or extreme violence, any age group can glean ways to "get started" in creativity. The book is more of a tutorial collection of interactive fill-in-the-blank pages with simplistic fonts, designs, and drawings.

After the first page immediately starting a task (to fill in the page with at least three positive words), Crutchley has the reader sign his or her name at the bottom as co-author of the future book to be completed.

With a short one page foreword, big bold words state:
Things to remember:
Start every task.
If you don't like one, start another.
Don't be afraid.
There is no wrong.
You cannot fail.
Smile.

Starting on a sophomoric footing, the author gives simple tasks to do without any thinking, stimulating the thought process to write down anything that comes to mind such as scribbling words out, crossing off the words "task" with different colored pens, drawing anything that comes to mind in small boxes, or writing with your weak hand, mouth, or foot.

After a ten minute pause, the next section gets a little more complicated, drawing what was observed when you went outside for the break. The book pushes, prompts, and promotes creativity by forcing the reader to willingly participate in the nonsense, silliness, and fun problem-solving tasks.

Besides having a procrastination log, lists of things that need cleaning or organizing, panic pages to vent emotions, and designing achievement awards, the book mentions how to overcome the fear of starting by figuring out what enables and holds one back. The final section is on finding your end goal by breaking tasks down in smaller chunks.

With quotes from famous people, the book empowers the reader to start now, not later, to find his or her mojo and move on successfully on a project. This is a unique gift book for business team meetings to inspire, artists who are afraid to expand their creations, and writers staring at the blank page day after day.

Unique jump-start to creativity

This unique book on jump-starting creativity doesn’t spoon-feed good ideas and suggestions for moving past blocks. Instead, it’s chock-full of exercises designed to get you out of your head and onto the page. While encouraging us to make messes and allow our work to be less than perfect, it forces us to take action and not sit around waiting for inspiration to strike.

It’s risky to start a new project when we don’t know the outcome. But if we never start, we can never know the joy of completion and the chance of success. If you work through the exercises in this book, you may find some of your creative blocks vanishing, leaving you free to create.

Artistic Ability NOT Required

I'm a fiction writer, and I love to jump-start my creative day with an exercise or two. I LOVE this little book that's packed with fun and fast creative tasks. Making messes that don't matter is a great way to turn off that pesky internal editor & this book does a fantastic job!

Highly recommended for both writers and artists. And wouldn't it be great if teachers used books like this in the classroom? Hint. Hint.

There is some good stuff in here

This is a fantasy anthology offered under the theme of Midnight Magick and Dark Fantasy. There is some good stuff in here; my clear favorites were Waiting for Spring by Lance Schonberg and The Trade by Ty Arthur, two atmospheric tales of dark magic, malignant supernatural creatures, sacrifice and unexpected redemption. Unfortunately, the quality of some of the other offerings was inconsistent. Some of the short stories could have benefited from better editing and not all seemed to fit the theme.
