Although Lewis is perhaps best known for his sports-related nonfiction (including The Blind Side), his first book was the autobiographical Liar's Poker, in which he chronicled his disillusionment as a young gun on Wall Street in the greed is good 1980s. He returns to his financial roots to excavate the crisis of 2007–2008, employing his trademark technique of casting a microcosmic lens on the personal histories of several Wall Street outsiders who were betting against the grain—to shed light on the macrocosmic tale of greed and fear. Although Lewis reads the book's introduction, narration duties are assumed by Jesse Boggs, a veteran narrator of business titles (including Lewis's own 2008 book Panic!). Boggs's rich baritone is well suited to the task and trips lightly through a maze of financial jargon (CDOs, derivatives, mid-prime lending) and a dizzying cast of characters. Michael Lewis has written from the perspective of a financial insider for more than 20 years. His first book, Liar's Poker, was a warts-and-all account of Wall Street culture in the 1980s, when Lewis worked at the investment bank Salomon Brothers. Everything Lewis has touched since has turned to gold, and The Big Short seems to be another of those books, combining an incendiary, timely topic with the author's solid, insightful, and witty investigative reporting. Only the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette criticized what it felt was a rush job of writing and a failure to integrate the individual stories. Few readers will care for the message here (despite laugh-out-loud moments of absurdity), but Lewis is a capable guide into the world of CDOs, subprime mortgages, head-in-the-sand investments, inflated egos--and the big short. However, as Entertainment Weekly points at, if you're only going to read one book on the topic, perhaps this should not be the one.

Just saw the movie and loved it too

Just saw the movie and loved it too. As one who is fairly knowledgeable about financial markets and dirivities--I worked for a decade as a trader myself--I found the book realistic, the movie not quite so much, but darn good. I couldn't put the book down. Extremely entertaining. The only small quibble I have is that Micheal Lewis neglected to name Barney Frank, and the movie producers failed to have him play himself, as the intrepid expander, defender and exploiter of Fanny Mae and Freddie Mac, and one of the chief architects of the housing bubble.

Lewis is a great story teller for sure. His characters , if larger than life, are nevertheless life like. One is sure to love his heroes and hate his villains. (Oh, and if anyone cares to watch another financial debacle as it unfolds, with Goldman Sachs again playing the role of greedy thief-in-chief robbing taxpayers and small investors alike. take a look at what has happened to Puerto Rico's municipal bonds. Lewis's stories remind me of some of John Irving's tales, lacking only Irving's ability to create hilarious humor. (The Christmas Play scene with Owen Meany as the baby Jesus in A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY stands out as perhaps the funniest thing I have ever read.) Lewis' LIAR"S POKER is also worth reading, and again Goldman is a major culprit.

Fascinating, but hard reading if you're not *very* knowledgeable in the area of finance

The subprime mortgage crisis, the housing bubble, the bank bailouts: it was about eight years ago that I first heard these terms. I was living unhappily in a group home for people with disabilities, and I didn't follow the news all that closely, but I noticed that prices were going up without anything like a corresponding increase in my monthly SSI check. Even family members with secure, professional employment seemed to be struggling. And this was all happening, someone explained, because the banks had made a bunch of loans to people who couldn't pay them back, and now everything was going to pot all at once.

In "The Big Short," Michael Lewis tells the story of the subprime mortgage crisis in a way that couldn't be more removed from my own perspective, or that of anyone I knew: the story of the money managers, traders, and analysts who figured out the weaknesses in the subprime bond market and placed their bets that the bubble would burst in a *big* way, and *soon*. They were right, of course, but even they didn't realize just how deeply corrupt the system was, or how devastating the fallout would be when the crash came.

Although I follow the news more closely now than I did in my twenties, I've still never taken much interest in the world of high finance, and I probably never would have picked up "The Big Short" if my husband hadn't been intrigued by the trailers for the movie released late last year. When I learned that one of the men profiled in Lewis's book had Asperger's syndrome, like me, I was definitely in.

Lewis explains in detail how the subprime mortgage crisis happened, but his interest is less in analyzing the event as a whole than in profiling the eccentric, self-confident, cautious men who dared to swim against the current of the most respected financial entities - and found themselves vindicated. My favorite parts of the book were, by far, the small-picture slices: personal histories, colorful anecdotes, delicious little ironies. As often happens when I stumble upon the human element of something I've never taken any interest in before, I found myself suspecting that perhaps high finance wasn't an inherently tedious subject after all.

Unfortunately, Lewis starts in assuming his reader has a pretty good understanding of the world of high finance already. As assumptions go, that's really not such a bad one; anyone who picks up a book like this probably already knows a stock from a bond, a hedge fund from a mutual fund. A chapter on "Finance 101" would certainly be annoying, if not actually insulting, to the book's target audience. However, this isn't a technical book for market insiders, either. Lewis knows he's not exactly writing a fluffy beach read; he even jokes, about a quarter of the way through the book, that the reader who has managed to follow the narrative that far deserves a gold star. I believe a glossary would have been a useful addition: readers unfamiliar with some of the terms specific to the subprime mortgage bond market explained in the book could refer to the glossary to clarify anything they'd forgotten without having to flip through earlier chapters, while definitions of more basic terms would make the book more accessible to a wider audience. (Perhaps the most prominent example of the kind of thing that could have used a better explanation is found in the title itself. An unofficial poll among friends of mine, all more or less educated, productive adult members of society, turned up only a couple who knew what "short selling" was. For the record, "short selling" is essentially a way of betting against the market by borrowing an asset and then selling it, on the basis of the belief that the price will have dropped when it comes time to return what was borrowed. Lewis never explains this.)

I wouldn't say "The Big Short" is entirely inaccessible to the general reader, especially one with easy access to the Internet. (Fortunately, I had my smartphone close at hand while I was reading.) Even when I didn't understand the specific details of what I was reading, I was almost always able to get the gist of what was going on, and Lewis is very good about succinctly summing up the effects of complex sequences of events. I did enjoy reading this, and came away from it vowing to be more confident in my own carefully reasoned conclusions even when they go against the grain. I haven't seen the movie yet, but if it stays true to the basic events of the book while presuming a little less knowledge of high finance on the part of its audience, this may well be one of those rare cases in which the majority of readers are better served by seeing the movie instead, or at least seeing the movie first.

Greed is not so good.

Clever and intriguing with a real from the street feeling as the writer, Michael Lewis tells the story from the viewpoints of several critical, but lesser known “main players” who saw and actively partook in the Wall Street madness. Lewis spent several years on wall Street- straight outta college and he understands the games played, his earlier book “Liar’s poker” dug into this –covering the 1980’ “Greed is Good” fever. ( I will be reading that book sometime in the future). What I took away from this book is that the reason the Bush and Obama administrations did not punish these big firms and their CEOs more is that (besides the corporate money influence standing in the way), the Wall Street bond “rabbit hole” is so deep that if you pull hard enough on one firm- they would collapse and as their bonds collapse- it would pull down one firm after another as they have all bet against each other’s bonds so heavily, resulting in a colossal financial collapse. What is perplexing is why Washington gave so much of the tax payer’s money to Goldman Sachs and to Citigroup.
One warning I will share is that the language is this book goes beyond “Salty”. It was if the film “Serpico” was filmed in a bank’s conference room. The reader may be offended.

Helen Hamlin tells a very detailed history of Aroostook County Maine which is not only informative, but is also a very enjoyable book to read. It was published in 1948, so it tells the story of a bygone time, and how a section of Maine was opened up and developed for farming. The book is well researched and very informative and tells the story of this little known area of our country.

About the Author

A forager and permaculturist with roots in rural Nebraska, Jerome Osentowski lives in a passive solar home he built at 7200 feet above Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley. Director and founder of Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute and a permaculture designer for thirty years, he has built five greenhouses for himself and scores of others for private clients and public schools in the Rockies and beyond. He makes his living from an intensively cultivated one acre of indoor and outdoor forest garden and plant nursery, which he uses as a backdrop for intensive permaculture and greenhouse design courses. Among his accomplishments is hosting the longest-running Permaculture Design Course in the world, now at twenty-nine years running. Jerome and Michael have also been instrumental in identifying, conserving, and propagating heritage fruit trees that have survived and borne crops for over a century in the harsh environment of the Roaring Fork Valley. Jerome’s explorations of sustainable systems and his travels for development projects have taken him to Baja, Nicaragua, Patagonia, Finland, Australia, and the Caribbean.

It's difficult to make such a complex topic so accessible to non-professionals while retaining so much useful knowledge.

I've built and used high tunnels (unheated), a glass faced insulated greenhouse with wood stove, and single-wall and double wall insulated high tunnels with climate batteries. Largest structure I've built was single wall high tunnel, 8'x30' with 140ft of 3" draintile climate battery, 36" depth. After reading the first 71 pages, ( still reading feverishly ), I've filled a notebook page with single line bullet points of "ah" moments that list improvements and understanding of many details of their performance that I want to further investigate and improve.
This is after reading the summary part, not the chapters dedicated to those topics, so it would not surprise me to use the notebook up by the time I'm done with the book, giving me years of new things to try to improve production and lower inputs in accord with permaculture principles outlined in the book.
Very accessible, and I think it helps establish common ground in a confusing field for discussing, comparing, and developing hoop and greenhouse structures. I've previously read Elliot Coleman, and "the Solar Greenhouse Handbook", and find the examples and metaphors very accessible. This is the distilled wisdom of a very experienced greenhouse grower and builder, with lots of technical detail to share, but also good at providing a framework for discussing the good and bad qualities of a greenhouse.
My only complaint is that it's not quite fair to list the price of a greenhouse of this size (Phoenix) as $7,000 without accounting for the hours to build it, which even at 3 dollars an hour probably represent a bigger investment than the cash.
It's also not fair to blame Jerome for the missing pages in a copy of the book - My book is not missing the pages mentioned, though I have not verified the absence of this problem from all pages in the book. I'm certain that a call to the printer of the book would result in a replacement without the printing problem.
I'm unaffiliated with CRMPI, have toured the facility, have tested and approve of his methods, and have taken a Permaculture design course elsewhere ( nope, didn't drink his coolaid). His red and purple plums and turkish figs are outrageously good.

More "fluff" than I expected...

I was somewhat disappointed actually. It was lacking is real detail, though some readers will be satisfied with the story and his trek through all this.

I'm giving it only '1 star' but I don't hate it. The publishers did a great job of creating more than there really was I think. To me it was more of a "How-not-to..." report, than a how to report. A lot of unnecessary problems and not enough technical detail as many hoped for.

Without my less positive comments, I allowed 3 colleagues to read it over the past weeks and only one felt it was worth purchasing. But then after we all discussed it he decided he was also just really more impressed with the way the publishers presented the story and information, more than the actual usable content. Yes, the publication is 'well done', but still missing much.

I'm not a negative guy at all, but don't understand why some are so mesmerised to give it a '5 star rating'. I guess you need to fit into a very niche lifestyle to feel this was more than "an interesting read".

I guess what we are really saying is that it should probably have been a blog story or magazine article. His work, overall, isn't something most people will want to duplicate. It's just another use of 'geo-air, geo-solar, and other types of earth battery technology', but others have done it more efficiently and with less re-do's... I think most are looking for more technical details.

Very interesting book with lots of pics and info on how this gentleman made Forest Garden greenhouses in his cold climate. Tells how to do it for yourself. Thoroughly enjoyed it and keep picking it up to re-read parts.

I FOUND THIS BOOK VERY USEFUL Being a practicing Christan and not being into WICCA or Witchcraft I have never had the occassion to purchase a book on candle burning before now. I had always associated such practices and being associated with Satan worship. Boy was I dead wrong. The author says that candle burning is a positive force in the universe...and not at all negative like I had thought. I got out my Bible and did one or two of the candle burning spells and found that the room was immediately energized with white light all around. I felt very peaceful . . . I had wanted to help someone in my family overcome a bad situation in their life (its somewhat of a personal matter so I wont go into it here), and a few days later I received a phone call from the family member and it turned out what I had prayed for using this book came about.I have given this book to others to use and they also report very positive benefits so I would recommend it to anyone who asked.

This book really works!!!!

I have purchase this book over 2 years ago and I cannot understand those who say it is a waste of time. I am a hardened skeptic myself when it comes to so many of these self help, new age and magic books.. Very few perform the promised results but this one delivers 200%.. Every time I have used the candle rituals in this book, the results came extremely fast. This stuff really works.. and unlike other books of it's kind.. it doesn't send you out to purchase expensive oils and special made candles that cost a fortune in specialty shops. All you need is a bottle of olive oil and a 99cent candle if that's all you can afford.. and your ready to see miracles happen. No kidding, I take my spiritual life and rituals very very seriously.. and this book absolutley works. Don't be put off by the people who wrote the bad reviews, I have no clue what they are so down about.. Did they even try the rituals in this book, or did they just read it and decide, "hey, this can't work?" Well it does work.. and if you desire positive magic that will bring great results, please do buy this book. It's simple and inexpensive to use the rituals and you will be amazed at what happens!!!!

Magical Psalms

The bible consists of 150 psalms. William Oribello take the reader through beginning to end. In the introduction the author urges the reader not to try to hard to believe but just to go through the motions of the rituals. The presentation starts off with the preparation of candle method. Is the practitioner attracting or repelling. The next part tells the divine name of God that one needs to use. The third part tells the reader the purpose of the psalm.

There are certain times that are most beneficial for candle magic based on your birthsign. The planetary hours are based on the hours after sunrise. Since I am a Gemini and I was born under the planet Mercury the hours given to the day are as follows.
Sunday 3rd, 10th,and 17th hours : Monday 7th,14th,21st hours. : Tuesday 4th,11th ,18th hours : Wednesday 8th, 15th and 22nd hours : Thursday 5th,12th,19th hours. : Friday 2nd 9th, and 16th hours. Saturday 6th,13th,20th hours. Wednesday is the best day for Geminis.

Colors are very important for candle magic. Red - Energy or Love , Pink - Love, Green- Money and Good Fortune, Blue- Healing and psychic development, Purple - Power over enemies, -personal power or spiritual attainment.

Preparation of the candles is based on purpose. To attract put some oil on the bottom and rub toward the top stopping at the middle. Next put some oil at the top and rub toward the bottom stopping at the center. To repel you put the oil in the center and rub toward the bottom. Next you apply some more oil in the center and rub toward the top.

After anointing the candle you carve in the divine the name. Candle are prepared for one purpose and then not used for any other. Next it must be used for that psalm. OOnce the candle has burned down wrap it in cloth and bury it or throw it in running water.

Steps of the ritual
1. After anointed and carved the candle is lit.
2. Say the psalm.
3. sincere prayer in own words.
4. silent meditation or visualization .
5. After meditation extinguish candle and then put it away.

Psalm 4: to have Good luck, Green candle to attract, Divine name JIHEJE ( This psalm is said three times before sunset. Say it daily until you see it change. You can say it seven time before going to court in front of the judge.)

Psalm 5: To obtain favor with the authorities, Prepare purple candle to attract. Divine name CHANANJAH

Psalm 6 : For healing Eye problem, prepare blue candle to attract, Divine name JASCHAJAH
