About the Author
Jean-Claude Mezieres and Pierre Christin created ValerianA" in 1967 after working in the USA together, one as a cowboy, the other a teacher. While A"ValerianA" is Mezieres' only comic series, he's worked as an illustrator in many other areas, including designs and sets for The Fifth Element,A" and he was awarded the Grand Prix du festival d'Angouleme in 1984. Christin also works in collaboration with other artists such as Tardi and Bilal and writes novels and film scenarios.

First of this classic franco-belgium sf series

This volume is the first of the "Valerian" series (here called "Valerian and Laureline"), a classic and long running franco-belgium science fiction series. This series is credits with influencing several prominent science fiction movies.

Valerian and Laureline are spatio-temporal agents for the future earth empire Galaxity. They can travel in space and time from the 28th century. Valerian is an agent from that time, whereas Laureline is actually a peasant girl from the 14th century who joined him. In this story, they must travel back in time to 1986 New York in pursuit of a criminal from their time. Earth at that time was devastated by a nuclear war (the album was originally published in 1970, so this was the "future" for them). V&L know that Earth will rebuild, so they avoid messing with the past, but are successful with their mission.

Cinebooks plans on reprinted the whole series, many for the first time in English, like this album, at a rate of about 2 per year. I look forward to them, as I've only gotten the prior 8 of the albums that have been reprinted in the US. I wish they would also reprint the actual first album, "Bad Dreams" that comes before this one, that shows how Laureline joins Valerian.

Fantastic looking comics

Fantastic looking comics. The translation does seem to be a little plain or uninspired, but I assume they're pretty straight forward. A really fun looks at 60s Sci-Fi in the vein of STAR WARS and DOCTOR WHO, but that is more likely to have influenced those franchises than to be influenced by them.

Beginning of a great adventure

THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS by Jean-Claude M�zi�res and Pierre Christin is not the greatest science-fiction comic book ever. But it is the beginning of what is one of the most influential, entertaining and long-lasting sci-fi comic books. Ever.

The cartoonish illustration style of M�zi�res, in the European tradition, has been a problem for those attempting to break into the superhero-saturated U.S. market. But given the recent interest and popularity in the more fluid and expressive illustration styles of the likes of Darwyn Cooke or Jordi Bernet, it might finally be the right time for appreciating the mastery of the nonrealistic line.

Writer Christin, whose later collaborations with Enki Bilal and Jacques Tardi are equally noteworthy, is still learning his craft here. There are a couple of long expository sequences, the characters whose Hawksian banter would soon move to a much higher level of sophistication are now there more to just set off the scenery, and it’s all a bit messy.

Yet some of the concepts are already potent, like a scene where we have flood victims cursing our heroes for not helping them while they stand on the roofs of their devastated homes. He would in future books sharply comment on issues like colonialism or imperialism, but always in a manner that distinguishes an artist from a pompous fool — it enhances the story, gives it weight, but never preaches or takes over.

In the end, any minor issues I have with this book are at most inconveniences. THE CITY OF SHIFTING WATERS is overboiling with iconic images — many of them original, some of which are riffs on older ideas — all crammed into a superb adventure that is still only a modest beginning to one of the finest science-fiction comic books ever created.

This book is a wonderful resource for social scientists and clinicians interested in assessing various aspects of sexuality using quantitative measures. An incredibly broad range of areas of study is covered, often with more than one measure for each topic area. Born 1911. Met Tito 1937. Joined Communist Party's Politburo 1940. Key player in the Partisan resistance to the Germans in WW II. In 1945 became one of Tito's leading cabinet ministers. He was active in assertion of independence from USSR in 1948. In 1953 became one of the four vice presidents of the country, and in December was chosen president of the Assembly. Within a month however his criticism of the Party and his calls for liberalization led to his ouster from all political posts and in 1954 his resignation from the Party. Imprisoned in 1956 for an article in an American magazine pro the '56 Hungarian uprising. Arrested 1957 for The New Class; released 1961. Arrested 1962; given amnesty 1966. Died 1995 in Belgrade.

It hardly needs to be said that anyone interested in studying the life and times of the famed Yugoslav dictator Tito cannot avoid reading this book. Milovan Djilas was one of Tito's most trusted deputies during the communist-led antifascist resistance during World War II, and one of Yugoslavia's most influential politicians during the immediate postwar years (considered one of the regime's chief ideologues). Even after his break with Tito in the early 1950s and general fall from grace, Djilas kept abreast of Yugoslav political events at the highest levels, as well as the personalities standing behind them. Here he offers a relatively candid and often critical view of Tito, and provides many insights into his actions and motivations. At one point in the text, Djilas also inadvertently repeats some of the rationalizations used by Tito and other Yugoslav officials for the often brutal political repression of opponents (both real and imagined), especially after the 1948 Comintern crisis. All in all, this is a very readable and illuminating insider's account of Tito and his leadership style.

Brotherhood, unity and boredom

Milovan Djilas' critical biography about Yugoslav Communist leader Josip Broz Tito is surprisingly uninteresting, especially so since Djilas was one of his closest collaborators for decades.

There is some gossip about Tito's hunting parties, women and inability to speak fluent Serbian (Tito was a Croat). We get to know that Tito was the de facto dictator of Yugoslavia (no surprise there), but also that the Titoist regime was periodically more liberal than the Soviet Union (also old hat). Some episodes from the partisan war against the Nazis are retold, etc.

With the exception of Tito's bad treatment of his last wife Jovanka, however, there is little of exceptional interest in this book. Indeed, Djilas even claims that Tito wasn't involved in the Stalinist purges in Moscow during the 1930's which destroyed the old leadership of the Yugoslav Communist Party, making Tito the new leader. Somehow, I found that very hard to believe. Tito was in Moscow at the time. He was obviously Stalin's choice. Is Djilas hiding something? If so, one wonders why, since he later had a fall out with Tito. (Just a thought. I'm not an expert on Tito's biography.)

On a more humorous note, I noticed that Djilas claimed that Tito wasn't a heavy drinker. This is interesting, since former Algerian leader Ahmed Ben Bella claims in a French book that Tito was an alcoholic, leading his doctor to exclaim: "I wish Ben Bella would visit us more often, since that's the only thing that keeps Tito from getting drunk" (or words to that effect). As a good Muslim, Ben Bella didn't drink alcohol, so on his frequent visits to Belgrade, the marshal of Yugoslavia was forced to play the absolutist! Who is right, Djilas or Ben Bella? No idea, but I almost suspect it might be Djilas, since Ben Bella spins some obvious tall tales about Khruschev's and Stalin's drinking habits in his book, as well (not available in English, by the way).

The Swedish edition of "Tito: The inside story" also contain interesting photos of Tito in various contexts, taken from the German edition. I'm not sure whether they are included in this English edition. Probably not. But then, who cares?

The inside story courtesy of Djilas is a boring one anyway.

We have Tito. Tito have us. Boredom-boredom-boredom.

I didn't enjoy this book. I also don't enjoy when people call Tito a dictator. I grew up in Yugoslavia during Tito's time and we all had everything. He was a great leader and a humanitarian.
