Michael Jacobs is Visiting Professor in the School of Public Policy at University College London.

Michael Jacobs is Visiting Professor in the School of Public Policy and Department of Political Science at University College London. An environmental economist and political theorist, his work has focused on the political economy of environmental change. His books include The Green Economy: Environment, Sustainable Development and the Politics of the Future (Pluto Press, 1991), Greening the Millennium? The New Politics of the Environment (ed, Blackwell, 1997), The Politics of the Real World (Earthscan 1996) and Paying for Progress: A New Politics of Tax for Public Spending (Fabian Society 2000).

From 2004-10 he was a Special Adviser to the UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, responsible for domestic and international policy on environment, energy and climate change, and before that (2004-2007) a member of the Council of Economic Advisers at the UK Treasury. He was formerly General Secretary of the Fabian Society, Co-Editor of The Political Quarterly and a research fellow at Lancaster University and the London School of Economics. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the LSE, a Visiting Fellow at the Institute for Public Policy Research and Senior Adviser to the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, which he helped to found.

Professor Mariana Mazzucato (PhD) holds the Chair in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value, University College London (UCL) where she is establishing a new Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (launching Autumn 2017). Mazzucato’s highly-acclaimed book The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths (Anthem 2013; Public Affairs, 2015) was on the 2013 Books of the Year list of the Financial Times. She is winner of the 2014 New Statesman SPERI Prize in Political Economy and the 2015 Hans-Matthöfer-Preis and in 2013 she was named as one of the '3 most important thinkers about innovation' in the New Republic.

She has advised policy makers around the world on innovation-led growth and is currently a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisors; the World Economic Forum’s Council on the Economics of Innovation and SITRA’s (Finnish Innovation Fund) Advisory Panel. Her current research projects include two funded by the EC Horizon 2020 programme: Innovation-fuelled, Sustainable, Inclusive Growth (ISIGrowth) and Distributed Global Financial Systems for Society (Dolfins) and a new project on Rethinking Medical Innovation by the Open Society Foundations. Her recent research includes projects funded by the Ford Foundation and the Institute for New Economic Thinking, and work commissioned by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Brazilian Ministry for Science and Technology.

She is currently writing The Value of Everything which will be published by Penguin’s Allen Lane in 2017.

All Men Should Read This Book

This is a really amazing book. I am a man who has worked in the corporate world for a long time and--I have to be honest--I have been guilty of many of the subtly sexist behaviors that Bennett describes. But after reading Feminist Fight Club, I have been able to readily identify those moments and take action to avoid them--I can literally sit here at my desk and think of half a dozen examples of times when I was about to interrupt a woman in a meeting but held my tongue. The book has also made me a much better ally to my female colleagues, as many of the strategies it outlines (such as, for example, making sure women get the appropriate credit for their ideas/work product) can be implemented by men. In short, this book has profoundly changed my perspective and actions at work, and I have no doubt those changes are going to lead to better outcomes and better relationships for me as well as my female colleagues.

Oh, I almost forgot--the book is also incredibly well-written, insightful, hilarious, and fun to read. There's no doubt I will be going back to it time and time again in the future.

Awesome, practical, and hilarious

CANNOT speak highly enough of this book. Bennett does an amazing job of not just talking about the obstacles that women face in the workplace, but giving real life and ACTUALLY HELPFUL tips on how to combat them. That she does so in a hilarious and readable way (with awesome illustrations) is an added bonus. I bought this book for every woman in my company, and would recommend it for any woman who's entering the workplace, is already in the workplace, or is ever planning to enter the workplace. To be honest every man who works with women (aka every man who has a job) should read it too.

Love the Feminist Fight Club!

I'm in the middle of reading this book and already feel compelled to review it. I have a female boss who is supportive and empowering, so I wondered if a book on sexism in the workplace would even be that relevant to me. This book is meant for every working woman! Even though I am in a positive work environment, I have strongly identified with what Bennet wrote about working mother's (As someone who pumped for over a year, I laughed out loud at the stuff about "lacthaters" and the "Will I pump today?" flow chart...I was not expecting this and I loved it!). This book reminds women to speak up, take credit they deserve, and not undermine each other. The statement "fight patriarchy, not each other" is a recurrent one, and one I want to take to heart. This book is so entertaining and empowering. Ok, now I need to either go to bed or get back to reading this book!

Lucid and fun perspective on entrepreneurship

This is a very worthwhile book that advances a lucid and academically sound perspective on entrepreneurship. It is a view on value creation that goes against the grain of much that is being taught at business schools the world around.

Despite the theory's academic credentials this book is not an abstract treatise (for a more rigorous treatment, see Sarasvathy's Effectuation: Elements of Entrepreneurial Expertise (New Horizons in Entrepreneurship series)). It wants to support aspiring and practicing entrepreneurs in building successful ventures. It is very accessibly written with a minimum of jargon. I was surprised and happy to see my 18-year old son pick up this book and read it in just a few sittings. Since it has offered interesting fodder for family table talk.

So what is `effectual entrepreneurship' about? Effectuation is a way of creating a business that is prepared to acknowledge irreducible uncertainty: the market cannot be defined; consumers are not aware of their future preferences; new technologies may emerge; available data are incomplete and conflicting. Acknowledging these constraints means that we can only have modest expectations as regards the usefulness of market research and competitive analysis to lead us to new opportunities. So, rather than the prevailing `search and select' paradigm (identify underserved markets, build business case, implement), a `create and transform' approach is in order. Therefore, the effectual entrepreneur is more like a hunter, acting on local possibilities and contingencies as she navigates an unfolding landscape: "In the concept of transformation, the creation of a market need not be intentional or even the result of foresight or imagination of possible new markets. It could simply be one way to fulfill an individual's motivation and/or an unanticipated consequence of people just doing things they think are possible and worth doing." At bottom, what separates effectual entrepreneurs from others is a different perspective on risk and control. Expert entrepreneurs deal with uncertainty, not risk. They are trying to control a future they cannot predict.

Despite the organic and messy nature of this process, Saras Sarasvathy and Stuart Read have been able to identify a number of principles that guide effectual entrepreneurs. They are:

- Start with your means: don't wait for the perfect opportunity; start taking action based on what you have readily available.
- Set affordable loss: evaluate opportunities based on whether the downside is acceptable rather than on the attractiveness of the predicted upside.
- Leverage contingencies: Embrace surprises, remain flexible as regards goals.
- Form partnerships: with people willing to make a real commitment to jointly creating the future with you.
- Create opportunities: make the future happen by working with things within your control; don't worry about predicting the future.

The book gives life to these generic principles through an inspiring patchwork of real-world cases. Hi-tech and low-tech, large and small, American and non-American examples underscore that in real life effectuation rather than the bloodless fiction of business plans is the norm in building successful companies.

The book is structured in three parts: Part I gives a broad-brush account of effectuation and its underlying principles, and deconstructs some of the prevailing myths about entrepreneurship. Part II is a nuts and bolts discussion of effectuation in action. The principles are now discussed in more detail and their implications for financing, partnerships and branding are explored. A final part briefly discusses the relevance of effectuation for large, mature companies and for social innovators. As said, many aspects of the discussion are illustrated with well-selected examples. At the back there is a handy overview chart of all the cases linking them to the effectuation principles they help to illustrate.

The research to support the argument made by this book does not stand on its own. It chimes with much of what we have learned in systems thinking and complexity science about self-organization and emergence. Other streams of research that usefully complement this perspective on entrepreneurship are focused on design thinking, reflexive practitionership, transdisciplinarity and on dealing with 'wicked problems'.

I notice the Kindle version of this book has been withdrawn. Rightly so as in its electronic incarnation this book is all but unreadable. The sophisticated layout of the printed version, with lots of inset boxes, has been turned into a bewildering mosaic of undifferentiated text blocks. All the more a pity as the e-book was sold at a hefty price. Quite a letdown from this renowned publishing house.

This book offers an inspiring and fun perspective on entrpreneurship and is wholeheartedly recommended but only in its printed format.

A Very Important Book

Effectual Entrepreneurship is an excellent and very important book on entrepreneurship and innovation. It gives a lot of practical detail on how entrepreneurship occurs and how successful entrepreneurs actually work. The detail included is very important because so many books in the past have been lacking in their explanation of how entrepreneurs actually work. This book is quite consistent with other recent work on strategic intuition (William Duggan) and Peter Sims (Little Bets). Readers interested in entrepreneurship and innovation would benefit from reading these three books together. And although this is the case, Effectual Entrepreneurship has a great deal of new insight itself; drawing on extensive and in-depth research with entrepreneurs. Do not miss this fine book by Professor Sarasvathy and her colleagues; it is excellent and indispensable.

This is an excellent textbook. I am an Assistant Professor in entrepreneurship and I made the switch to this book recently from more traditional textbooks for several reasons. Most importantly, I feel this book really captures the essence of most entrepreneurial activity and therefore is of most use to the majority of students taking an entrepreneurship course. In addition, my experience as an entrepreneurship instructor is that there is considerable redundancy across the curricula. Some repetition is good, but I don't know how many times a student has to write a feasibility study or a business plan (for a business they are never really going to launch). This book is not that. I feel it's a great complement to more traditional approaches. A fundamental resource for understanding a little-known topic

Those who have studied some foreign languages will be aware that in many languages adjectives and even predicate nouns can have the same structures that in english are considered "verbal". In languages such as Arabic, by contrast, adjectives are totally like nouns to the extent of taking definite articles. Students who have studied Basque or Hindi will wonder at the absence of the simple verb forms.

In "Intransitive Predication", author Leon Stassen takes the mask off the mysteries behind these differences in a remarkably complete manner. Stassen first explains with a clarity I have never seen in any other linguistics book what the predicate categories he is describing are, and then with equal efficiency compares and defines the three strategies that can be used for intransitive predicates: the verbal strategy, the nominal strategy and the locational strategy. These depend on in the first case absence of a support item, in the second case on a fully suppletive "copula" (which in many languages is not a verb) and in the third case on a support verb. Stassen also defines the patterns in terms of negation, so that for instance the suffixes for "to be" a student of Turkish may know are actually not verbal at all because their negation is different from a "proper" verb.

After this, Stassen looks at how these three strategies can be combined to encode five different classes of intransitive predicate, namely event predicates, property-concept predicates, class membership predicates, identity predicates ("this is my wife") and locational predicates ("the post office at the end of the street"). He shows that there is a very clear and easy-to-understand hierarchy behind how these five predicate types are encoded, so that there can be no more than sixteen actually possible patterns.

Next Stassen discusses with very easy-to-understand examples cases of each potential pattern. the examples, using familiar linguistic notation that is far from incomprehensible though for the merely curious. After that, Stassen looks at the concept of "switching" whereby a predicate category can be encoded by more than one strategy. Because switching is a very common phenomenon, it has to be discussed in detail, and this Stassen does very well. He shows that there are several types of switching, which can either be split by subcategories of the predicate or by the critical category of permanence. Permanence leads to the use of the most time-stable category possible, which is nominal or verbal depending on whether the language is tensed. This notion of "tensedness" is the decisive factor in the extent to which languages use the verbal strategy, because it is impossible for a language have tensed property-concept words as it is non-iconic. Thus, Stassen shows clearly how highly tensed languages like those of the many Papuan and more northwesterly Amazonian families have nouny adjectives usually encoded by a zero copula. In contrast, languages without obligatory bound tense marking like Chinese or Vietnamese or Yoruba have verby adjectives, as do most of the polysynthetic indigenous languages of North America and southeastern South America.

Lastly, Stassen ties his vast body of research together into a "predicate space" analogous to the "vowel space" of Ian Maddieson. This "predicate space" allows one, together with the "tensedness" parameter, to see why languages' "verbal systems" work as they do. It explains extremely simply the curious fact that languages with nouny adjectives have shared nominal and locational predication and those with verby adjectives split encoding.

All in all, "Intransitive Predication" must stand as one of the best works for the general linguistic student. It is epic is scope yet by no means hard to read, and the examples it provides are so many and so clear that the reader is left knowing everything (s)he must. It is no wonder this book was a critical component of the WALS atlas.

Great Mystery, Thriller, and Terrorist Plot!

FLIGHT 12 FINALE featuring Ponzo’s main character FBI Agent Nick Bracco, opens with the passengers boarding for departure. Ponzo helps his readers understand why Nick is on the Flight 12 sitting next to Taboo Journalist, Jess Kimball. In the course of the conversation between them Nick asks Jess to help him learn the backgrounds of the passengers boarding. Nick thanks Jess and even gives her a new pen to use to write her notes. Ponzo introduces his readers to several of the support characters, some shady and some good providing backstories and their roles in the author’s storyline. He keeps readers up to date of his characters’ backgrounds as the story unfolds.

Ponzo keeps readers on edge as he builds the suspense and intrigue. During the flight he explains the intense actions taking place on board including the pilot secretly changing course. The author gives his readers background details of the terrorist’s plot to hijack Flight 12. Nick is caught off guard when he learns who is on the terrorist’s leader’s team. Readers are given an inside look at the terrorist leader’s plans but are kept in the dark as to whom or if anyone on the flight will survive. They are given an inside look as what the FAA and FBI’s Terrorist Teams know about Flight 12, learning there is no proof Flight 12 has been hijacked other than an air traffic controller supervisor’s feelings. Gary Ponzo skillfully keeps his readers involvement in his story giving them a hint as to what might happen to the passengers. Flight 12’s ending comes out of left field surprising everyone. Flight 12 – A Nick Bracco Thriller is well written and earns a 5-star ranking.

Very Disappointed

I was very disappointed in the finale of the Flight 12 series. I was expecting a conclusion of all the characters from all the books but now am left hanging.

Good book but didn't neatly wrap up the previous books.

I've read the Nick Bracco series as well as all of the flight 12 books, and have thoroughly enjoyed them all. And while the conclusion to flight 12 was a good book, it completely lacked what I was looking for in it - which was and ending or at least some interaction to all the previous stories.
