Gordon J. Wenham is lecturer in Old Testament at Trinity College, Bristol. He was formerly professor of Old Testament at the University of Gloucestershire. He is a recognized expert on the Pentateuch and has written commentaries on Genesis, Leviticus and Numbers in addition to numerous studies in the Old Testament.

Helpful for the "big picture"

Concise. Well-written. Very helpful in charting out the "lay of the land" of a very difficult Bible book. Numbers is long and notorious for its seeming lack of continuity. It includes extended lists of census results, detailed camping arrangments, fascinating human interest stories, and chapters of ritual law--all mixed together. How do you make sense of it all? How do the details fit into a unified, coherent whole? This is where Wenham helps. None of the seemingly unrelated parts escape his effort to see their logical connection to the main message. Not the last word on the unity of Numbers, but a very helpful start for those interested yet intimidated.

Very helpful commentary - strong entry in this series

First off, the 2008 date listed with this volume is the date of the reprint. This book is from 1981. Second, I give it a 5 star rating in the context of the scope of the series it is in. If it was in a series that tends to include more technical information, it would not rate five stars.

With that said, Wenham's commentary is a very strong entry into the Tyndale Old Testament Commentary (TOTC) series. The TOTC series is quite uneven (for example, I have found some entries are relatively weak and often unhelpful). Wenham's commentary on Numbers provides a lot of substantial information and is better at anticipating the kinds of questions you have in terms of why you consult a commentary in the first place. It does not bog you down in technical information that other commentaries can do.

I'd strongly recommend any Bible reader to consider reading John Walton's Ancient Near Eastern Thought and the Old Testament: Introducing the Conceptual World of the Hebrew Bible. I recently completed it and now as I read the OT, I feel like I've gone from watching a 13 inch black and white TV to watching a 40 inch High Definition color TV. As a result of reading Walton's book, as I read though Numbers recently, I felt less inclined to consult a commentary because the goings on narrated in Numbers suddenly make a lot more sense. With that said, you are still going to want to consult a commentary for specific questions, and Wenham's is a great choice. After reading Walton's book, the material in Wenham's commentary supplements it nicely - I feel like I get a more complete picture of the text than I would with either alone.

By the way, I'm impressed with Ashley's NICOT volume on Numbers as well. Numbers has some very difficult passages for modern, Western readers. But after reading Walton's book on the conceptual world of the Ancient Near East, and consulting Wenham's and Ashley's commentaries (along with the IVP Bible Backgrounds Commentary), most of those difficult passages make much more sense, without resort to work arounds that stretch credulity.

In terms of how much this costs (very little) and how tremendously helpful this usually is, buying this volume is a no-brainer.

Great insights, but too short

This commentary is the perfect example of why I simultaneously love Wenham's writing, but dislike the Tyndale series' constrictive format. All while reading, I kept feeling that I was only seeing the tip of the iceberg of what insights Wenham had on a particular passage, and found myself wishing that they had just let him write another hundred or so pages.

The commentary is solidly conservative, and particularly strong on literary observations. This is a great book for someone who wants a quick overview of Numbers, but those looking for a more "in-depth" coverage of the details will need something a little bigger to go along with it.

STAKE A CLAIM ON EXCEPTIONAL ROMANCE!

If you have never read a Pam Hillman novel before, you are simply missing out on some of the best historical romance available in the Christian market today. With a fresh voice and easy, languid flow that enhances her charming western tales of the heart, this exciting new author demonstrates just why she was a 3-time Golden Heart winner with unique plots and tender romance that will curl your toes. When it comes to old-fashioned, sigh-worthy romance in the Wild West, Ms. Hillman is not only a must-read, but one of my absolute favorites!!

Claiming Mariah

Pam Hillman's most recent novel Claiming Mariah did not disappoint. From page one, the story pulls readers in to discover what is going to happen to Mariah, her grandmother,and their beloved ranch. In addition, Slade, one of the antagonists and the leading man in this novel, makes readers wonder what is causing him to be so demanding. As the story progresses, Slade's background is disclosed bit by bit which allows a deeper understanding of why he makes the choices he does.

Throughout the story, a definite tension exists between Slade and Mariah. Beyond the expected and growing romantic tension, the larger tension exists over their differing approaches to faith. Mariah and her grandmother are devout Christians and prayer warriors who draw strength from prayer in every situation. Slade does not share their religious viewpoints and is portrayed as hostile to Christianity for a large part of the book. As expected in a novel from a Christian publishing house, Slade and another character both choose to become Christ-followers by the end of the book.

While reading Claiming Mariah, information on Mariah's sister Amanda is witheld until much later in the story. In the beginning, Amanda is mentioned only as the sister who is away at school. A great deal of assumptions are made concerning Amanda's purpose and motives for being away and the time is never right for Mariah to explain the true situation. However, not being able to inform Slade of the truth also keeps this important piece of information a secret from the reader although a few hints are provided.

While the story primarily focuses on Mariah and Slade, another aspect is some shady business that has been going on with the ranch. This mysterious undercurrent involves a variety of individuals close to Mariah who are not quite as they seem. This mystery ends up in a dangerous situation which forces the hand of the main characters.

Being a western themed novel, there is some gun violence, but it is not glorified or grotesque. I would not have issues with my middle school daughter reading Claiming Mariah, although it certainly holds the interest of adult readers. As expected everything is wrapped up neatly by the end of the novel. I would enjoy reading more of Mariah's story as I feel her story has been completely told.

I must confess I am quite disappointed the author and publisher made the choice to only have this fine book available as an e-book. I have many friends and family who would enjoy it but choose not to use e-readers. This choice also keeps many libraries from adding it to their collections.

Good Writing, Could Have Had Better Character Development

I would give this book 3.5 stars.

Pam Hillman's second novel, Claiming Mariah focuses on two main characters-Mariah Malone, and Slade Donovan. Mariah and her grandmother have been the owners of the Lazy M Ranch in Wyoming since her father's death, but things take a drastic turn when Slade Donovan, a rugged, strong, yet bitter man, and his gentle, quiet, disfigured brother Buck, arrive at the Ranch seeking full ownership. Years before, Mariah's father (Seth) and Slade's father (Jack) were former business partners, until Seth supposedly cheated Jack out of a gold claim. Seth went on to found the Lazy M, while Jack drank away his sorrows, becoming violent towards his children, and eventually dying from his alcoholic ways when Slade was just a boy.

Bitter, angry, and set on kicking Mariah and her grandmother out of the Ranch, Slade demands ownership of the Ranch, which Mariah quickly hands over. The book then follows Mariah and Slade on their personal journeys of forgiveness, acceptance, and not always relying on assumptions to shape one's reality. The romance part of the book was also in good taste.

I enjoyed the descriptive language of the story--I felt as though I were there--and I liked the style of writing. The author wrote from both character's perspectives, instead of being a neutral narrator, which gave some added interest to the story.

I had a couple minor complaints about the book, mostly about character development and how realistic the emotions of the characters were. For one, I didn't notice a lot of character development. Slade went from bitter, to not as bitter, to bitter, to not as bitter, to bitter, to "working on it". Mariah went from sad, to ashamed, to fine, to ashamed, to sad, to fine. I would have liked to have seen more distinct development instead of such a roller coaster ride.

Secondly, Mariah signs the Ranch over to Slade almost immediately after his arrival. There was talk of some elusive letter Mariah had previously sent to Slade's family apologizing for her father's swindling Jack Donovan, but we don't get to hear much about that. I'm not a confrontational person at all, but I would probably fight to keep the only home I'd ever known. I likely wouldn't go straight to the bank and sign over the deed. Mariah seems okay with this--sad, but not overly distraught or angry, which I find a little far-fetched. Finally, I wish some of the other storylines would have tied up a bit. What happens on the Ranch after the book ends? What happens to Mariah's sister? What happens to Slade's family? Especially Buck? A short epilogue would have tied up some loose ends.

While I found a couple things to gripe about, I did enjoy the book, and look forward to passing on my copy to my "Book Chain"...aka my mom to my gramma to my aunt, who all love reading as much as I do.

A great book

The introduction says "This book is for everyone who wants to truly understand audio but prefers practical rather than theoretical explanations" and also that it's for people who've been around audio for awhile and want to know how it really works. That's me, and it met my needs perfectly. However it would not be appropriate for those who don't already have a sense of what decibels are and how electronic gear works or who are not technically inclined because the whole books is about the science, engineering and art of audio equipment and its use. It's friendly and approachable, simplified without being dumbed down, but it's still a technical book.

This book is written in a very straightforward, plain language manner. Moving logically from one topic to another and treating each in detail without being either dry nor falsely humorous. I got the impression that Ethan is a friendly, straightforward, knowledgeable and no-nonsense guy. He's honest in his mention of areas where there is controversy in the industry (e.g. are oxygen-free copper cables better?), unapologetic about his opinions (no!) and rational in supporting them (because you can't measure any difference). He's also really good at explaining what really matters (e.g. without proper treatment the acoustics of your listening room make even the best speakers sound bad, and even the best speakers have far more distortion than any competent, inexpensive amp) -- and again he explains why in ways that make sense.

I bought the book primarily for the material in three of its 23 chapters and ended up reading eight because I enjoyed it so much. There are other chapters I'm holding in reserve until I get to those points in my audio journey.

Not Quite

For a title like that I would expect more. Not to mention it's really expensive, even in the Kindle format. Many great readings on the subject are much more affordable.

The author is definitely knowledgeable and is successful explaining a lot of audio concepts and techniques, but his authority is compromised when you find some fundamentally wrong information, such as the difference between +4dBu and -10dBV - which is NOT 14dB.

Maybe it's irrelevant as an isolated piece of info, but that certainly touches the "expert" and "trust" side of the book. I found some chapters to be really shallow. The "pan law" paragraphs are a good example of a confusing text, perhaps exposing not the best areas of expertise of the author.

Looks like the book is trying to touch every single aspect of audio (and even video production) to get more authority. It would be better if edited, perhaps to half the content, twice the depth. I would have focused on advanced topics only.

This is not a intermediate/advanced book as proposed somewhere. This is more of a beginners/intermediate reading, illustrating things like how to manage tracks in a DAW.

I particularly don't enjoy the defensive tone all over as if trying to prove everyone else wrong.

I value the hard work and intentions, but I would wait until the price is down.

Sure to become a standard

This is an excellent book book for three main reasons: (1) Mr Winer can comment convincingly on all aspects of musical reproduction (performance, recording, and playback); (2) the nice balance that the book places on breadth and depth; and (3) the book is approachable by many (I daresay it's an enjoyable read).

Many in the industry know Ethan Winer from his substantial web presence, both on his own sites and on the audio forums. Many also know him as the CEO of RealTraps, a leader in the field of acoustic treatments. And a lot of folks know him for his critiques of audiophile fetishes and "golden ear" listening abilities. Far fewer know him as a cellist. But anyone looking at his body of work in the audio field would surely acknowledge his expertise, passion, and experience. And his contributions.

As to the book itself, I think that if you review its table of contents and a few sample pages you can readily decide if it's for you. Said another way, all the topics represented in the Contents are delivered at moderate depth and equal authority. There are neither weak sections nor seminal treatises - this book can be a primer and/or encyclopedia depending on your needs.

I approached it as an audiophile and home theater owner (who is in the process of a DIY treatment of my listening room). I own many great books in the category (e.g., Toole). For me, AUDIO EXPERT was a welcome addition to this fine little library.

easy to read and look up main points

I purchased this book for a global public health course (go figure). As a textbook it was easy to use and easy to reference. I don't always read all of the required material and often use the books as a reference when I am studying or looking up main ideas. This book worked great for that, as a supplement for what was covered in class. The material was easy to read and very straightforward. I bought this book new and ended up not needing the access code so I was able to sell it back for only $20 less than what I had paid for it. So not only was it easy to use it was also a good value.

Easy and educational read

Of all my textbooks, this has been one of the most enjoyable to read. I really like that the chapters are short and to the point, giving me the basic information without all the unnecessary fluff I seem to find in so many other textbooks. My only problem was that sometimes the graphs were a little hard to read at first and lacked a key or index to help me understand what exactly I was looking at.

Kindle version is excellent. I love the option to search and it really helped with online open-book quizzes for my class. However, the pages are not consistent with the paper copy of this book, which might be a problem for some people.
