A fine novel

Offering a rare glimpse of Pakistan not long after partition, this tightly plotted work remains one of Zulfikar Ghose's most well known novels.
The story involves the wealthy and powerful Shah brothers who conspire to destroy a land holder named Aziz Khan who has refused to sell his property to them. The novel works on many levels, but certainly it is the story of a culture in transition, a new way eclipsing an old way. Resplendent with striking images of Pakistan, the sociological matter is rich: modernization clashes with tradition, economic progress and industrialism obliterate time-honored values. The Shah brothers represent the new order, avaricious, devoid of scruples, shrewd manipulators of the economic process. On the other hand, Aziz Khan symbolizes the tradition, the land, and the stolid character at the heart of the old culture. Ghose writes: "And these seventy acres, this piece of earth, this world of Aziz Khan, did not appear to him as land, as a property with a market value. It was a sufficiency of existence. So that nobody could take the land away from him without first taking away his existence."
Interestingly, it is the youngest Shah brother, Afaq, whose seemingly random act of violence against a teenage peasant girl sets the story into motion. Afaq remains one of the most interesting figures in the novel. Like the bedtime story he tells in the opening chapters, he is the monkey who is always running away from disaster. Indeed, this image foreshadows Afaq's actions for the rest of the novel.
One of the truly exceptional qualities of this book is the author's style. Ghose maintains a straightforward narrative in this novel, but in some passages, the philosophical questions seem beyond the intellectual range of the characters and this situation gives the author's style some of its unique qualities. Aziz Khan's story is tragic because though he is a master of his land, he is not a master of language. Ghose writes the following:
Now a monument himself though no one had come to look; an inscription in a dead language; a hieroglyph the new literacy did not care to interpret. . . . Had his tongue been as competent as his hands. . . .
Yet beyond the specific circumstances of a land holder in the Punjab, Ghose grapples with larger issues of language and meaning. Often interweaving subtle and complex insights about the philosophical problems of language into his storytelling, Ghose frequently makes the novel's conventions, that is to say, its form, serve the needs of his style.
In The Murder of Aziz Khan one of the key themes has to do with the human consciousness and its relationship to the past, the present, and the future. Memory serves to order experience and this order is what we call Time. Yet objects have a way of defying human ordering. In this novel, objects take on a kind of menace. Like massive boulders creating rapids and whirlpools in the river of Time, places and landscapes refuse to be ordered and in fact, distort, divide, and disrupt our perception of the flow of things giving the novel a resonance and depth that is not often found in Fiction.

good story but very depressing, for a book about life in Pakistan shortly after it was founded the book is great, but the story is so depressing, O.K. to read but recommend have a happier story to read afterwards or you will feel down for days.

Illuminating the Shadow Side of Prayer

Can prayers cause damage and destruction? Do we possess the power to harm others with our minds? If so, how can we minimize the damage? Dr. Larry Dossey answers these questions and more as he delves into the topic of the power of prayer to cause harm in his brilliant book, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Dossey describes how people utilize negative prayer both consciously (in order to win at a game or in business), and unconsciously (venting feelings and thoughts without regard for the effects on the recipients)... and he covers a wide spectrum of negative prayers from the sophisticated curses and hexes of sorcerers to the more common varieties of "drive-by prayer" and "prayer muggings". Those who work with prayer every day, such as sorcerers and priests, know better than to make idly damaging statements such as, "he ought to be shot", or "I hope he chokes" -- and Dossey includes some fascinating stories of how such thoughts have precipitated real physical effects. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking a better understanding of how to understand and protect oneself from negative prayer, even when those prayers come from well-meaning friends, family, and colleagues.

Science meets spirituality and much more. Many studies and events are examined. So glad I read this...Dr. Dossey does not claim to have all of the answers but he sure does bring up some good data and give the reader some damn cool stuff to ponder.

inspired, intelligent worshipping of a knowable God

Having read several hundred books on spirituality, prayer, religion (etc), I'd say this is one of my top five favorites. The only downside is the title. The book's focus is a little bit more on the power of NEGATIVE prayer than anything else.

I've never had any patience for religious teachings or faith systems that require you to check your intellect at the door before entering into a holy and inspired place. That's the beauty part of this book. It's written for people who love God and people who refuse to ignorantly worship "an unknown God."

Nearly every page of my copy of this book has been highlighted, as I've found so many powerful truths contained there. One of my favorite stories is Dossey's telling of "The Death Prayer."

He writes, "When Europeans first came to the Hawaiian Islands, they encountered a practice they literally called the 'death prayer'. They developed a horror of this practice, which came to be the 'most feared phenomenon in old Hawaii.' Eventually, laws were drafted prohibiting it" (p. 98).

Dossey then goes on to write in depth about why this prayer is so powerful and how The Lord's Prayer is truly a strong weapon against this "negative prayer."

"One native healer said, 'Have you ever heard of the Lord's Prayer. Do you remember the words, 'Deliver us from evil?' You white people have one of the best forms of protectoin, and you don't even know it! Why, I even use it myself!' he said with a grin" (p. 196-197).

On page 24, Dossey writes, "I have often thought that a handy definition of negative prayer is 'prayer without empathy.'"

As a mature believer, I'd highly recommend this book for all people who take their praying seriously. For Christmas, I purchased a copy of this book for my dearest friends, so they could understand a bit more about the awesome power of prayer - for good and for evil.

Some of the best quotes:

"We can feel the presence of another as keenly through animosity as we can through love" (p. 183).

"Curses permeate our religious life. The most obvious example is the condemnation of the unsaved to eternal, unimagineable suffering in hell" (p. 12).

And in talking about the death prayer of the Hawaiian Kahunas, he wrote,

"Not only did [William Tufts Brigham] confirm Long's [early 1900s American psychologist] impression that the kahunas could kill people at a distance with negative mental intent...he also described how the curse could be fatal to the individual who perpetrated it" (p. 98).

Powerful book. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to protect themselves from evil people and their evil thoughts and purposes.

About the Author
Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, writer, children's author, and songwriter. Since 1974, Boynton has written and illustrated over forty children's books and seven general audience books, including four New York Times Bestsellers. More than 35 million of her books have been sold—"mostly to friends and family," she says. She has also written and produced five albums of award-winning children's music. Three of her albums have been certified Gold, and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, is nearing Platinum. In 2008, she was awarded the Milton Caniff Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Cartoonists Society.

The exhilarating, riveting and rhyming tale of one lonely being's stuggles with constant rejection

This is our family's 3rd copy of this classic board book from Sandra Boynton...we literally read the others to death through our 5 (soon to be 6) children, so it was time to get a fresh copy. This adorable story is about a hippopotamus who watches life go by...everyone busy with social lives and activities that pointedly do not include her. Far be if from me to give a plot spoiler on this delightful 14 page board book, but it definitely leaves you with a tear jerking (ok..maybe it is only our 18 month old who fake cries and gives the character a sympathetic kiss?) ending that begs for a sequel.

The illustrations are absolutely charming and the range of emotions this seemingly silly little rhyming store evokes is surprising! We always include this in our new baby gift baskets as it is a long time family favorite that the older kids never tire of reading to their siblings.

**Odd note...somewhere along the line, the author changed a few words in this book and, for those of us who had completely memorized the original text, it was mildly annoying... lol She did the same thing with another one of our favorites The Going-To-Bed Book. For a million years I knew it forward and backward... then we ordered updated copies and I was tripping over my tongue to learn the new phrases. (Yes, ask my children...I am at least a million years old.)

A revised edition?

We love board books... they are a wonderful introduction to reading for infants and toddlers.
My 4 star rating has more to do with a change in the wording on the first page than anything else - the original reads "A hog and a dog do a dance in a bog..." this new one reads "cavort in a bog" - I can appreciate expanding one's vocabulary, but how many little ones understand "cavort"? Wondering why the change in wording, and very much prefer the original. Otherwise, it is the same well written book that we've had to replace with each of our young children because it is so well loved... board books are intended for the less-than-gentle book handling of little hands so they aren't expected to last forever, but these do a good job of holding up to one or two littles before needing to be replaced.
Sticky fingers touched the page? No problem, a lightly damp cloth will wipe off the page without ruining the book, unlike regular paper pages. Simple and easy. Now who with little ones doesn't like simple and easy??
This has long been a favorite toddler story in our household, though it's a tough call to decide which of Sandra Boynton's books are the best, because quite frankly, they are all good!

for those who love snuggling and reading with their small kids

Sandra Boynton's "But Not the Hippopotamus," "Moo, Baa, La La La," and "The Going to Bed Book" are three books that should be in every household with small children. These are definitely classics, for those who love snuggling and reading with their small kids. Silly and funny. These books have been "classics" and steady sellers for 30 years. A lot of little kids have laughed at the silliness in these books. Boynton did something really good when writing and drawing these charming and colorful board books. (My grown kids and I can still recite these stories by heart.)

A perfect size beautiful book

It is a perfect size beautiful book, simple to understand, and chapters are neither short, nor long. A section on activity and feedback is quite impressive and lively to the readers and builds up the levels of confidence by understanding simple questions and answers relevant in our day to day life. Economics is about making good choices and the book serves the purpose of using health resources appropriately in all contents of the book. A simple observation is more than enough to provide good health care by knowing the methods of economics and principles. The first and ultimate lesson of economics still revolves around the principle of opportunity cost whether markets or trade or health care. To get 5 stars, further improvements shall be made, which authors do time-to-time when their readers give feedback, leading to the next edition, in this case, the third edition of the book. It is a very good book.

Used the book at the University of The Gambia (UTG) for MPH/MSPH students. Text was helpful to me as faculty to organize and present the material. The problem: no text books for the students - but the concepts and references were extremely important and useful for students with limited exposure to economics and business.

Clear, concise, and practical

The author distills his extensive experience down to an easy-to-follow recipe for dramatic gains, coupling disciplined techniques with the "human side" of how to achieve high performance levels.

Much better than kthe vast majority of books on leadership

First, let me provide a disclaimer or two. I know the author well. I also maintain the TOC booklist on TOCICO so on two counts I am probably biased. This is my 2 cents anyway.
Excellent book! Kevin has a winner here. Easy to read and overflowing with great advice. As I read Kevin’s book, I saw the linkages to Goldratt’s theory of constraints. He has provided a lot of common-sense guidelines to people wanting to be better managers and to lead an organization to its goal. I have long seen the disconnections among achieving the organization goal, leadership and teamwork and the many “teambuilding” activities recommended in most business books. If a leader and his/her team are able to identify and address core problems that hinder achieving the organization goal with win-win solutions then that builds a winning team. Kevin identifies the core problem as Alignment and Engagement. He then provides concise definitions for each term and provides a framework to focus on your goal (making more and more money if you are a for-profit business) by:
Alignment with the goal and across the organization
Engagement to bring out people’s best and
Connecting teamwork to the bottom line
Kevin has built the CRTs for misalignment and low engagement for the reader and provides a concise narrative of the major symptoms of both core problems to assist the reader in determining the correct core problem and how to address it.

Profit Nuggets

If this was a baseball game I was reviewing, I would tell you that Kevin has hit a grand slam!! I love the way Kevin has explained the importance of teamwork and how the team must be aligned and engaged. If you are having problems getting your team focused, read this book! If you are having problems generating enough profit, read this book!! What I liked most about Kevin's book is his concept of Profit Boosters in that he brilliantly weaves in basic methods to increase profitability. This is one book that all Plant Managers, GMs, CEO's, Supervisors, etc. must have in their reference libraries. Great job Kevin!!
