From a family of dedicated business professionals who want nothing more than to see your business succeed, OMG! What's the Focus? is the book you need to buy if you are serious and ready to take your business to the next level, and most importantly enjoy the journey. I specifically benefitted from chapter 2 (Six Steps), chapter 7 (systems) and chapter 8 (team) as I will refer to this well-written information again and again. Thank you authors for your most excellent collaborative work. This book is a keeper.

It kept my focus

As much as i know I should read a new book a week, I do struggle to keeping interested in reading. This book defies that challenge probably because it hits so close to home fro me. a great book for anyone who wants to break through the ceiling of achievment and for all the entrepreneurs out there.

A Way Through Alzeimer's for Family and Professional Caregivers

`Contented Dementia'. Never have two words been more important in our lives: just as my sister and I were getting desperate last summer (2009) about the relentless debilitating march of our mother's Alzeimer's, we heard of `Contented Dementia' by Oliver James. This book is the distillation of twenty years' work of a remarkable woman, Penny Garner, and all her experience of close, personal hands-on caring: first for her mother who fell victim to Alzeimer's, then for countless other Alzeimer's sufferers whom she has helped achieve contentment despite their deteriorating condition. Penny's no mind-altering-drugs method is deeply person-centered, and involves not questioning the person; letting them be the `expert' on their situation; and not contradicting them. The whole system is known as the SPECAL (Specialized Early Care for Altzeimer's) Method - pronounced `speckle' - , and is influenced by the monitoring tool Dementia Care Mapping developed by Tom Kitwood, professor of Psychogerontology at Bradford University in the 1990s. It's logical, workable and practical: an A-Z of "wraparound care" that both family carers and professionals can easily use.

Our mother Eileen was `disappearing' away from us with her Alzeimer's, and this amazingly helpful book has brought our mother `back' to us. We've rediscovered the real Eileen that her illness had started obscuring. With SPECAL care, our mum can be happy, contented, and very good company again - not the lonely frightened isolated paranoid old lady she had started to become.

This book showed us that our mother simply could no longer store new information efficiently. This was our key to unlock our mother from her growing isolation, from her frustrations, from her fears and her resultant panics and paranoia. She can happily talk about the past, but not what has just happened moments before. We have had to learn a new skill - `Making a Present of the Past'�, as SPECAL puts it.

This advice instantly changed how we related to our mother and she to us. Suddenly the arguments and rows stopped, and the despair faded as we zoned into her version of the world, a world with no stored memories of recent facts.

It is no exaggeration to say all our lives have been totally changed by `Contented Dementia' - and also by the wonderful email and phone help-lines.

I recommend this book wholeheartedly: a life-saver for dementia sufferers and carers alike. A huge thanks to Oliver James for setting down all Penny's fantastic wisdom and experience. With dementia becoming such a massive social issue, the sooner more people are aware of the SPECAL way of caring the better.

Contented Dementia

I have been struggling to look after my wife, who has dementia, and find this very helpful. It encourages me to "go with the flow", rather than fight to maintain faculties that have gone for ever. I have bought copies for my children and step-children, so that we all sing from the same hymn sheet.

Contented Dementia

Bought Contented Dementia for a friend who may need it for a spouse. Read some of it and was impressed with the common sense way the author suggests one deal with a dementia patient. Think it will be helpful for the friend and the children of the patient. It is only available from Amazon as it is a British book and not printed in the USA.

Dr. Marankan holds a postgraduate degree in pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy of University of Illinois at Chicago, USA. Fatima has extensive experience in pharmacy instruction at UIC College of Pharmacy, USA and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her academic, research and teaching achievements have been recognized by the Paul Sang Award at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the TLEF Award at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Marankan is currently the founder and director of Canadian Pharmacy Exam Prep (www.cpeprep.com) and Faculty at Thompson Rivers University, Canada. Most importantly, Fatima has extensive understanding of the requirements of pharmacy licensing exams in Canada; she serves as a member of the team responsible for the supervision of PEBC� exams (evaluating and qualifying) in Vancouver, Canada from 2004 to 2009.

Fantastic Resource for Pharmacy Exam Preparation- Canadian Pharmacy Exams- Pharmacist Evaluating Exams Practice Volume 2

I used this book (Canadian Pharmacy Exams- Pharmacist Evaluating Exams Practice Volume 2) together with the Volume 1, and I am completely pleased with the concise presentation of information and the relevance of the covered material to the actual Exam. For a pharmacist trained in a different country, these books must be included in your preparation strategy to help you avoid unnecessary detail from big fat textbooks and focus your attention on what is important. The package will be excellent if, in future editions, there is some coverage of very basic epidemiology and a "broad-brush" treatment of some regulations in pharmacy practice because these areas get tested in the exams too, although to a minimal extent.

Episcopal priest Mother Grey continues her mission to her church, St Bede's, and her town, Fishersville NJ. Murders keep getting in the way, however. And wonder of wonders, her nemesis Father Bingley is very helpful, though unwittingly. Most of the people encountered in Bury the Bishop show up again here, joined by some new ones, such as an oily dealer in semi-antiques. And if only Mother Grey had been able to convince Saraleigh that 2 children by 2 different fathers were enough. Lord help us.

Clint Arthur's book, 'What They Teach You at the Wharton Business School' makes you think about, not only how you can create a great business life, but how you can create a great life that brings you a whole lot of happiness and satisfaction. Clint teaches you how to think about becoming and being a success in all areas of your life. As a business owner, he reminded me of an important concept, particularly in the midst of a recession; He says, "A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow." That phrase and the concept behind it is simple but has profound consequences if not acknowledged by a business owner, where one's cash-flow is concerned. This book is fun to read and reinforces the importance of believing in yourself and loving yourself enough to take the best care of yourself possible....something I advocate, as well. About the Author
In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963 and The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center and Oxford University Press, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Century Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Torino (Italy). The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Sixth Edition

"The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People, Sixth Edition" is book on American History written by Alan Brinkley, an American historian who has taught for over twenty years at Columbia University. The title The Unfinished Nation implies the remarkable diversity of America despite the many efforts to build a single nation. Throughout history, America is constantly changing and Brinkley captures the views of historians and allows the reader to develop their own conclusions based on facts.
I was required to read this book for a U.S. History class. Originally not interested in history, I found the readings actually enjoyable, easy to understand, and complete with details of each event. Each chapter starts with a timeline stating important events mentioned in the chapter. Every timeline provides a visual understanding how each event is contextually connected and related. In addition to the timelines, multiple pictures including detailed explanations exist throughout the book. At the end of each chapter, there is a conclusion and summary with an extensive reading list containing the topics stated in that chapter. Each chapter starts a new development and complete history of America's past.
This book progresses chronologically, covers the first encounters with Native Americans in the 1500's, and ends with the compromise of 1877. In the first chapter, Brinkley discusses the initial discovery of America:
"The discovery of Americas did not begin with Christopher Columbus. It began many thousand years earlier, when humans first crossed into the new continents and began to people them. Be the end of the fifteenth century A.D., when the first important contact with Europeans occurred, the Americas were the home of millions of men and women (Brinkley)."
Brinkley goes on to explain some of the ways white Europeans viewed the Native Americans, whom they called Indians. The Native Americans experienced many changes and adversities throughout their history. Nevertheless, none is a tragic as the arrival of the Europeans.
The first and probably the most negative impact of European contact is the introduction of disease. Diseases such as Chicken Pox and measles common to and non-fatal among the Europeans turned out deadly to the Native Americans. However, disease and infection was not the only cause of decimation of the Native American. Those who survived became slaves, considered savages, and deliberately killed.
However, Brinkley points out that not all the European contact was negative. The Europeans introduced the Native Americans to new agriculture techniques, crops, and domestic livestock, the most positive and substantial impact being the horse.
Chapter 2 discusses the cause and outcome of the American Revolution (1754-1781). The end of the French and Indian War brought more tension between Britain and America. Britain had a larger presence and strengthened its control over the Colonies. The Proclamation of 1763 also prevented settlers from expanding westward. This, along with imposed taxes to repay Britain's war debt, led to the start of the Revolutionary War.
Chapter 15 is the last chapter of the book and the end of volume 1. Brinkley discusses in Chapter 15 the Reconstruction and the New South, Radical Reconstruction, and The South in Reconstruction. The Reconstruction period occurred after the Civil War between 1865 and 1877 and involved the re-integration of states of the confederacy. Brinkley explains that during his presidency during the Reconstruction period, Abraham Lincoln had plans to free more slaves and grant additional freedoms. Reconstruction freed the slaves and granted them equality. However, the freedoms granted under the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth Amendments were not entirely effective. The compromise of 1877 ended Reconstruction, bringing another restructure of the political structure of the South.
The Unfinished Nation provides a social background for the political and economic events discussed in each chapter. Brinkley clearly reveals the diversity and complexity of growing nation and the powers that enabled Americans to survive and flourish in spite of conflict and division. During the first half of the United States history, Brinkley describes the significant events that led to the foundation and evolution of the United States today. Alan Brinkley uncovers historical facts and presents them in an unbiased, yet captivating fashion.

I felt that because this book was so condensed, with history crammed in to meet the criteria that sometimes the timeline wasn't concise. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't well organized.

OK but clearly not great.

It contains accurate info but the info it contains is so broad that it skims over most of US History--I guess a textbook is supposed to to that in a general sense, but as a professor I found it lacking and wouldn't have chose this one for my course. I see that it comes with nice online components and is fairly modern but as a student reading it for a self-propelled style course that I took for fun I found that many of the test questions weren't even in this material and I could read it and not know about more than half of what I read. I did appreciate details that weren't in the textbooks of the 1990's like union strikes and monopoly dealings and a greater emphasis on race relations in mining and Native American dealings (more history being revealed) but over all I found the book a bit boring and strangely organized and lacking in depth.-- It jumps too fast post 1900 onward.--It seems to be cramming more history into the same length of textbook these days is their solution to the problem of more and more history being revealed, but I found it more of a problem. 2.5 stars.

The people who have lived outside the boundaries of normal societies and refused to play by the rules have long fascinated the world, and nowhere is this more evident than the continuing interest in the pirates of centuries past. As the subjects of books, movies, and even theme park rides, people continue to let their imaginations go when it comes to pirates, with buried treasure, parrots, and walking the plank all ingrained in pop culture’s perception of them.
While that explains some of the reasons Grace O'Malley's life and legacy continue to resonate, she was clearly a different kind of woman altogether. Far from being a member of an unprivileged class seeking to steal booty from any ship she could, she was both a queen and a rebel who defiantly fought to protect her home and way of life against the English. Naturally, while foreigners might remember her as a pirate and one of many famous rebels opposing the English over the centuries, Ireland has remembered her as a folk hero, and she has become the subject of all the poetry, songs, plays, and movies that come along with such a standing. 19th century writer James Hardiman may have summed up her legacy the best when he wrote, “Her name has been frequently used by our Bards, to designate Ireland. Hence our Countrymen have been often called ‘Sons of old Grana Weal.’”
One of the most famous pirates of all time, and possibly the most famous woman to ever become one, was Anne Bonny. The Irish-born girl moved with her family to the Bahamas at a young age in the early 18th century, which at that time was a hotbed for piracy by the likes of Blackbeard, but the redhead with a fiery temper would go on to forge her own reputation. After marrying a poor sailor who accepted clemency to give up piracy, Anne began a legendary affair with Calico Jack Rackam and became pregnant with his child, but that did not stop them from plundering the high seas aboard his pirate ship Revenge, at least until they were captured by British authorities. Anne avoided execution by “pleading her belly”, getting a temporary stay of execution due to her pregnancy.
Among all the pirates of the “Golden Age of Piracy”, none were as unique as Mary Read, who was one of just two known women to be tried as a pirate during the Golden Age, alongside her own crewmate (and possible lover) Anne Bonny. Like Anne, Mary Read was an illegitimate child who spent some of her childhood dressed up as and disguised as a little boy through incredibly strange circumstances. But unlike her future shipmate, Mary ultimately took a liking to it, and she continued to disguise her gender to take on roles reserved for men, including in the British army.
In 1720, Mary's ship was captured by Calico Jack, who already had his lover Anne Bonny as part of his crew and now unwittingly added a second female when Mary opted to join. Together the three played a legendary role as shipmates and possible lovers while continuing their piracy around the Bahamas, only to eventually be captured by authorities in October 1720. Most of the crew was executed, but Mary was able to successfully “plead the belly” and thereby receiving a stay of execution. This spared her the noose, but Mary died of illness before giving birth anyway.

I downloaded this on a fluke. I like strong bold brassy women and I like pirates and I was thrilled by this book. It had documentation that backed up what it said. Actual documentation from all these years ago and it was in a good light even though some parts were sad. Still, it seemed to have been spoken by the women themselves!

Good overview

A good short biography of three most famous women pirates. The most detailed is the section about Grace O'Malley. It also includes original source materail for Read and Bonny - (entries from Life of Pirates). It is a good overview, and sympathic to the women.
