About the Author
H. Schubert Palmer M.D. is a physician board certified in internal medicine and the sub-specialty of cardiovascular diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. He practices interventional cardiology and serves as ICU director and/or Chief of the Medical Staff at various community hospitals in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of Northern Caribbean University, Andrews University, and Loma Linda University School of Medicine. He has also been a Bible teacher for over twenty years at the Berean SDA church in Los Angeles where he also currently serves as Minister of Music.

A Unique Presentation of Biblical Theology

Do not be fooled by the topic! I began reading this book out of sheer curiosity and could not put it down. It engages your senses as it takes you on a journey "movie script style" of God's incredible love for His people. The author uses his medical expertise to reveal to his readers how much God really loves them; the height, breadth, depth, and length to which He, God, will go to demonstrate this love. He proposes that when one really research the depth of God's love he can come to no other conclusion but that God is "crazy in love" with his people.
The book is excellent for theologians and laymen alike, even more so for the young adult looking for a spiritual high. It's humorous and at the same time deeply convicting. You see God in a refreshing new light. I give the book two thumbs up!

Grant Allen has worked in the IT field for over 20 years, as a CTO, enterprise architect, and database administrator. Grant's roles have covered private enterprise, academia and the government sector around the world, specialising in global-scale systems design, development, and performance. He is a frequent speaker at industry and academic conferences, on topics ranging from data mining to compliance, and technologies such as databases (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL), content management, collaboration, disruptive innovation, and mobile ecosystems like Android. His first Android application was a task list to remind him to finish all his other unfinished Android projects. Grant works for Google, and in his spare time is completing a Ph.D on building innovative high-technology environments. I really enjoyed this book.

I felt she made choices that were really very quite difficult and unusual for Victorian times. She stuck to her guns,, and like all of us, was made to bear the consequences of her choice.

I did not like this book. The woman in the story endures self-imposed difficulties, with no final accomplishment. Very frustrating and annoying story. Only suggested for those highly interested in women's studies.

It's growing on me!

The title says it all. When I first scanned this book, I was more than a little disappointed. I thought it spent way too much time discussing details of primitive things like hooking up the cables, programming the SD card, etc. And not near enough about the "good stuff" like programming in C and assembly language. Not even Python. I didn't expect a tutorial in C programming, but I had hoped for at least a mention of GNU, gcc, and gdb.

Disappointed, I set the book aside and set out to find out for myself, using Google and other books, the things I needed to know.

Not being a Linux person, I had a lot to learn. I could use the bash shell, but only enough to do primitive things. I wanted to personalize my Pi, setting it up with larger fonts and a good screen editor. I had flubbed my first pass through the setup program, raspi-config, and wanted another go. I spent a LOT of time in Google and in emails, hoping to find answers to my questions, but only found more questions.

But recently, I took another look at the book. Imagine my surprise to discover that it answered EVERY SINGLE ONE of the questions I'd amassed over the last few months. It wasn't a matter of the book not meeting my needs; it was a matter of the fact that I didn't even know what my needs were.

The first step in getting answers to any question is to know enough to ask it. On my first pass through the book, all those answers went right over my head. It's only been on the second reading that I've discovered just how helpful it is.

If you are already a Linux wizard, can speak grep and makefile in your sleep, and want to write the next killer app, this book is not for you. But if you're new to Linux, and want to make your Pi a more comfortable environment, I can't recommend it enough.

This book is dated. The Raspberry PI has seen a number of updates which have using the Pi for a measurement system interfacing to hardware using the SPI or I2C extremely difficult.

Less than Meets the Eye

Narcissism never had it so good. The personal pronoun is overdone even though this is an autobiography. This book lacks context in almost every instance. Years from now, many readers will remember that Mary Wells and Harding Lawrence had a grand time living on the French Riviera and the Caribbean. They won't have more than a clue how the couple worked together on Braniff (which went bankrupt), or how Mary came to claim and reclaim the Continental Airlines account (bankrupt a couple of times) or felt about a client with little chances for long-term success, American Motors (bought-out before it could go bankrupt). (See the pattern here?) The writing is sometimes a twisted jumble -- one can almost envision the author speaking into a tape recorder as she "wrote" this book. If you're inclined to get this volume, a used paperback will suffice.

This is indeed a poorly written book, but it does share the insight of a great icon of the 70s and 80s ad game. For those who were/are in advertising, the perspective Lawrence gives is fun to remember when people and personalities really made a difference. An easy read, a few insights but really like reminiscing with a colleague about the "good old days." Lots of us would have loved to have just one of those tales to tell. The other reviews I've read on Amazon are pretty accurate. Reader beware.

Mary Wells Lawrence took the advertising industry by storm in the 1960's by becoming the first woman, and the first true celebrity to dominate Madison Avenue. Her advertising and business accomplishments are part of modern marketing history. However the drive; confidence and determination that made her success a reality are outlined in a simple, easy to read and easier to enjoy prose that made her the dominant force in a business that was, and still is, dominated at the top by men. Her secret seems to be a total devotion to talent and to client. She found, nurtured and generously rewarded the best writing and art direction skills of the day and she totally immersed herself in the business of the clients that she served. Her story is warm, funny, and totally lacking in self promotion. Its provides a behind the scenes peek at the blood; sweat;tears and talent that produced the most memorable ads of a generation.

Dying to Let You Know the Truth

Depending on which person you ask, death can be viewed as a terrifying inevitability or a peaceful denouement to a long and difficult journey. This book seeks to ameliorate your fears about the afterlife by consulting those who have already passed on. I have never read a book quite like this, and I'm sure that I'll never read a book like it again. It is an uplifting account of the peace found beyond the grave and how those who are no longer alive have the best advice for the living. I think it's easy to take life for granted, but this book really helps us put things into perspective. It's certainly helped me lead a more mindful and powerful life.

I've complemented this book with Manifestation Magic by Alvin Huang and Chris D'Cruz. If Mike Dooley's book is an inspiration for leading a better life, then Manifestation Magic is the blueprint for how to do it. It talks about the important things we are all looking to achieve like wealth, health, happiness, and stability in our relationships. It gives you a clear, concise guideline for how to manifest positivity into your life. The principles outlined in the book can be practiced by literally anyone, and I have certainly used them to my advantage. As a 34 year-old single mother of 3, I have never been happier, healthier, and more in control of financial future.

Having both these books in your library is a must if you ask me. I have benefitted greatly from the wisdom found in The Top Ten Things Dead People Want to Tell YOU and Manifestation Magic. I have taken control of my own destiny by harnessing the power of my brain and everything around me. I cannot tell you how impactful these books have been on my life. I have recommended these books to everyone I've come across, and I'll do the same for anyone reading this review.

Enjoyed it 3/5 of the Time

I give this 3 stars, because it resonated with me about 3/5 of the time. The earlier chapters were a refreshing take on the "you are what you think" philosophy a la The Secret. I enjoy Mike's take much more than the Secret, which I found to be too kumbaya/woo woo and focused on material abundance. Even though I have heard similar ideas before, I really enjoyed Mike's approach and I think it was correct to have him read his own book in the audio CD version I purchased.

However, the later chapters started to get a little too preachy/cultish for me. It went from "you are what you think" to "it's all you're own fault that you have a crummy life". In particular, the final chapter sounded a lot like the proselytizing of organized religion (which Mike bashes repeatedly throughout the book in an offhand way) in that he repeatedly talks about people "not being ready to hear the message". Along the lines of, if you disagree with us, you just haven't seen the light. Classic approach of organized religion and cults for millennia.

I've been a reader of TUT daily emails for over a year now and enjoy them immensely, but Mike lost me on much of the later material. In particular, the discussion about true evil in the world not existing was a bit hard to swallow. For example, it's hard for me to imagine that the soul of a 4 year old girl that is brutally molested and murdered (my example, not Mike's) somehow came back to Earth to have that be her experience.

Also, there is a limit to "thoughts become things". Mike does present some practical reasoning about this. He mentions that just because you think about something all of the time, it doesn't guarantee it will happen in this lifetime or in the way you think about this. For this alone, his book is a vast improvement over The Secret, which I thought implied you can just wish yourself to riches and abundance.

I was really looking forward to this book and expected I would give it 5 stars given my experience with TUT emails. But it went from very motivating and enjoyable in the beginning to a revivalist Sunday meeting feel towards the end.

A book to soothe your soul

I read a lot of books, but rarely am I moved to tears as I was with this wonderful book. I lost both an aunt and uncle to cancer in the past six months. This book most certainly soothed my soul and helped me find answers to questions that came up while witnessing my relatives' dying process. I also feel like I finally got confirmation on afterlife for my beloved fur baby who passed away 2 years ago. Even if you aren't experiencing any type of grief or loss, the wisdom contained in this book is phenomenal. I couldn't put the book down and want to read it a 2nd time!

About the Author
James R. McGuigan owns and operates his own numismatic investment firm. Prior to this business, he was Associate Professor of Finance and Business Economics in the School of Business Administration at Wayne State University. He also taught at the University of Pittsburgh and Point Park College. Dr. McGuigan received his undergraduate degree from Carnegie-Mellon University; his M.B.A. at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to his interests in economics, he has co-authored several well-known books on financial management.

R. Charles Moyer earned his B.A. in Economics from Howard University and his M.B.A. and Ph.D. in Finance and Managerial Economics from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Moyer is Dean Emeritus of the College of Business at the University of Louisville and Professor of Finance and Entrepreneurship. He is Dean Emeritus and former holder of the GMAC Insurance Chair in Finance at the Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University. Previously, he was Professor of Finance and Chairman of the Department of Finance at Texas Tech University. Dr. Moyer also has taught at the University of Houston, Lehigh University, and the University of New Mexico and spent a year at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Dr. Moyer has taught extensively abroad in Germany, France, and Russia. In addition to this text, Moyer has coauthored two other financial management texts. He has been published in many leading journals, including Financial Management, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Finance, Financial Review, Journal of Financial Research, International Journal of Forecasting, Journal of Economics and Business, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Industrial Organization. Frederick H. deB. Harris (Rick) is Professor of Economics and Finance at the Schools of Business, Wake Forest University. Dr. Harris holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and a Dartmouth College A.B. in Economics. His specialties are pricing tactics and capacity planning in product markets as well as price discovery in financial markets and security market design. He has taught managerial economics required courses in the M.A. in Management and M.B.A. programs and elective B.A., B.S., M.S., M.B.A., and Ph.D. courses at Wake Forest, the University of Texas, and William and Mary, as well as several universities in France, Italy, Germany, and Australia. Dr. Harris has earned two school-wide Educator of the Year awards and two Researcher of the Year awards. Other recognitions include Outstanding Faculty (Inc., 1998 and 2001), Outstanding Faculty (Business Week's Guide to the Best Business Schools, 1997-2004), Board of Associate Editors (Journal of Industrial Economics, 1988-2003), and the Runner-up Prize (European Corporate Governance Institute, 2007).
